Driving desensitized

I believe in the importance of drivers ed and continuously practicing safe driving because in fatal cases, the irresponsible driver never has the right to ruin the lives of fellow passengers and drivers, and cause pain to their loved ones. Even if they didn’t know the other person involved, that could be somebody’s son/daughter, somebody’s husband/wife, or somebody’s mom/dad. I believe that if people were more mindful, and that if driving schools stressed the importance of the lives of people, rather than desensitizing teens to car crashes and fatalities on the road, then they would be much safer from the start of their driving experiences.

My dad was caught up in what seemed like a fatal car crash on the freeway a few years ago. He was on his way home from work when the driver of a big rig behind him fell asleep at the wheel. From what my parents told me, the driver who had fallen asleep slammed on the gas, running into, adn pushing my dad into the vehicle in front of him, which also happened to be a big rig. My dad’s tiny car was lodged between the two, and eventually they all began spinning out, totaling my dad’s car. People rushed to my dad’s car to help and he remembers them telling him that they thought he had died. I am so grateful that my dad not only made it out of that crash alive, but also surprisingly without any injuries other than a few scratches and bruises. However, I know that there are so many who aren’t as lucky, and unfortunately there’s lots of young irresponsible people who lose their lives daily due to unsafe driving. I truly think that the desensitizing that reaches young people through the media affects their outlook on life, especially in cases behind the wheel. Young people from the start should be taught the value of human life, and how consequential their actions can be.
