Driving Saves Lives

For
most people in America, driving is an everyday task. One must drive
to work, drive home, drive to the grocery store, or any other place
where they need or want to go. Unfortunately, few people are aware of
the increasing rate of car accidents due to careless or reckless
driving. Moreover, few people are worried about getting in a car
accident. This must be changed. Awareness of the startling number of
car related deaths ought to be increased. People should know that
every time they drive anywhere, their lives are at risk. This
knowledge will hopefully encourage people to be more careful and
aware while driving.

In
this day and age, distraction while driving are seemingly endless
with the invention and popularity of smartphones as well as use of
social media apps and text messaging. These distractions should be
limited. Every phone should have a driving feature that does not
allow the driver to access social media and messaging apps as well as
games while driving. Moreover, the penalties for texting and driving
should be made more severe to keep people from looking and their
phones in the driver’s seat. By using their phone while driving,
people are willingly and knowingly endangering the lives of others
for something that may not be important at all. Implementing the
driving app and harsher rules will make drivers be more aware and the
road, thereby reducing the number of deaths in car related incidents.

Thankfully,
I have never been involved in a car crash, but several of my friends
have and their lives have been severely affected. One of my friends,
who was in a car crash with a person her age, is no longer
comfortable riding in the car with anyone other than her parents
because she remembers her experience in that car crash and is afraid
it will happen again. She never wants to experience that pain a
second time. Another friend of mine has been left with scars covering
her neck and chin as a result of a car crash. I have seen the effect
car crashes have on others and always make sure to drive carefully so
that I don’t
hurt anyone or hurt myself.

I
can do many things to improve safety on the road. I can make people
more aware of the dangers of driving and be aware of those dangers
while I myself drive. I can avoid distractions on the road by turning
my phone on do not disturb while I drive. Checking my speed and being
aware of my surroundings will also improve safety on the road. All
these things will help me to prevent an accident rather than be in
one or narrowly avoid one. Driving safety must be improved or more
people will continue to die unnecessarily.
