Having had my full
license for nearly a year now, I have seen the lack of caution and
seriousness from peers while on the road. I have gone through the
Driver Ed course at my home school, and have gained much important
information not only about the basics while driving, but also the
importance of staying focused on the roads. Driver Ed is extremely
crucial for new teen drivers. Being in such a tech savvy decade, it
is hard for some teens to disconnect from their phones and
electronics and genuinely focus while behind the wheel. It is
important to keep the Driver Ed curriculum based on safe and
un-distracted driving.
Driver Ed has a
crucial role in setting up teens for success and safety on the
streets. In America, 34,000 people die each year driving. Whether it
be carelessness or recklessness on the road, people are seeing the
negative effects. It is one of Driver Ed’s top responsibilities to
reduce this high number of deaths. As discussed previously, it is in
their best interest to involve the importance of staying focused on
the road. But, this job is not only for Driver Ed. It is every
driver’s responsibility to teach new drivers the dangers on the
road and do their best to keep them safe. Starting right from the
beginning, parents should teach their children to stay focused by
putting away their phones and solely focusing on the road with no
loud background music or distractions.
Having been in the
car multiple times with distracted drivers it is clear to see the
negative implications. I have been in a total of 3 car accidents in
my lifetime, all with my birth mother, who I no longer see. Every
drive taken with her she would be texting on her phone and blaring
loud music. While behind the wheel, there is never a good excuse to
be on your phone and taking your mind off the road. It is always in
my best interest, and I hope everyone else’s to express your fears
while behind the wheel with a distracted driver. Staying alive is
much more important than any text or message to another person, they
can wait. It is extremely important to not be selfish while behind
the wheel because you are not only putting yourself at risk, but
every other driver.
To keep safety on
the streets, every driver must put their phones away and focus
completely on the road. As my dad always says, “You are driving
around in a 4,000 pound missle.” This message always stays with me
while I drive and allows me to go into my car everyday with
seriousness and caution. Every driver should follow all rules of the
road and to drive when needed, not wanted. Many of my peers enjoy
going on “joy rides,” where they break speed limit rules and
drive for fun. This is unacceptable and puts every other driver at
risk. As a driver, you have serious implications and a duty to keep
yourself as well as others safe on the street.
