block of Manor Road is West Brandywine Township at 2:04 p.m. Saturday
June 2nd, 2018. On this day, my best friend was in a head on car
collision with a drunk driver who illegally passed the double yellow
lines and hit his car holding his father, stepmother, and himself.
They were transported to Paoli Hospital and the driver was arrested.
Nearly
1.25 million people die due to car crashes every year, that is an
average of 3,287 lives a day lost. If drivers were to become more
educated about driver safety and laws, then maybe this would reduce
the number of deaths. To receive your permit in Pennsylvania you must
be 16 and the way you can pass this test that you are required to
take is to get all questions right besides two. There is an app you
can download on your phone that is the exact test, so you can
memorize the answers for the test and soon forget them. To receive
your license, you must have held your permit for six months and have
driven at least 60 hours. But they don’t check if you have driven
that amount of time. During the driver’s test your drive around for
about five minutes and pass or fail. To me, this process seems
incredibly simple for something as serious as driving. There are
hundreds of thousands of people on the road driving every day and
many have held a license for 40 years and have not been retested on
their ability to react to everyday driving experiences. This process
cannot be safe enough when you look at the fact that there are 1.25
million lives lost every year because of driving mistakes and
carelessness.
In
order to reduce the number of driving deaths I think that there
should be a certain amount of time in which you must retake your
driver’s test to ensure you still have the capability of driving.
Second, the permit test should be more in depth to ensure teens know
right and wrong when on the road. Finally, the driving test itself
should be longer so the administrator of the test has the proper
amount of time to decide.
There
are countless steps one can take to be a better and safer driver.
First, no one should ever be under the influence of any substance
while driving. Second, if you are sad or angry or become anxious,
pull over, because those are the times where you make rash decisions
that can put your life in danger as well as others. Third, teach
children at a young age what to do while driving. If you run a red
light with a child in the car not only is that putting the child at
risk but teaching them that it’s okay to do that. There are so many
more ways to ensure safety to yourself and others on the road.
