Safe Drivers Are Heroes

Learning how to drive is an exciting milestone for anyone. Driving allows you to have a greater degree of freedom, because being able to drive, means that you can travel to just about any destination that you choose. But driving is a huge responsibility when it comes to the safety of the driver, any passengers that may be in the driver’s vehicle, any other fellow drivers on the road, and any potential passengers that may be in fellow drivers’ vehicles as well. Because the potential for injuries, and even death due to motor vehicles accidents is a very real possibility, the importance of a good driver’s education cannot be over emphasized. Without a good driver’s education, the risk of fatalities for everyone on the road is increased. And that is unfortunate because many motor vehicle accidents that have occurred in the past, could have been avoided if the driver or drivers involved in those accidents, had received a good driver’s education. Because driving safely really can save lives, safe drivers really are true heroes.

When it comes to reducing the number of deaths that are caused by motor vehicle accidents, there are definitely some steps that safe drivers can take to help with this. First and foremost, I believe that being observant and mindful of every road sign as you drive can help reduce the number of accidents and deaths on the road. Speed limits help a driver avoid accidents because if they are driving at higher speeds than are recommended, this could cause drivers to more easily lose control of their vehicles. Observing yield signs also helps avoid accidents because they make the drivers who are supposed to yield, be extra cautious before merging into fellow traffic that has the right of way. Coming to a complete stop at all stop signs not only helps prevent car accidents, but it also helps to safeguard pedestrians who may be simply walking across any intersection.

Making sure that the driver and everyone in the vehicle wears a safety belt at all times is another excellent way to reduce the number of deaths on the road. These days, some vehicles have safety belts that at least automatically secure the person who is driving. Others, sound off an annoying beep that can be heard until all passengers secure themselves with their safety belts. But there are some older cars on the road that do not have these features, so it is up to the driver to ensure that everyone in the vehicle secures their safety belts before driving begins. The best thing about these safety belts is that even if an accident does occur, each passenger who has a safety belt on, has a better chance of surviving the accident.

Another way to decrease the number of fatalities caused by motor vehicle accidents is to not drink and drive. When drunk drivers get behind the wheel, they are not only endangering themselves; they are also endangering the lives of other drivers, passengers, and even pedestrians who happen to be at the wrong place at the wrong time as a drunk driver drives nearby. So responsible drivers, who plan to drink alcohol at any event that is not in their own home, should either assign a designated driver who will not be drinking or at the very least, make arrangements for friends or family to pick them up after a night out on the town that includes drinking. But this has to be planned beforehand, because once someone is already drunk, there is just no way that they can make sensible decisions about driving while intoxicated.

I have never personally been involved in a motor vehicle accident, but I do know people who have. Thankfully they did not die as a result of the accident, but they did end up with some significant injuries. It took quite a while for them to heal from their injuries, and this impacted their daily lives in a negative way. But just knowing what these people went through after their accidents, has influenced me enough to know that I hope that I never end up being in a motor vehicle accident myself.

I believe that being a safer driver includes several things. For one thing, being alert and focused on the road at all times while driving is important. It is also important to pay attention to how other drivers are driving as well. It’s important to keep a safe distance from other drivers when possible and to always communicate with them by using turn signals and brake lights appropriately. I believe that it’s also important to avoid driving aggressively and to try and keep a safe distance from other drivers that do drive aggressively. Lastly, I think that it is super important to not text while driving and to avoid being distracted by loud music or by other passengers in the car while driving. By taking steps like these, safe drivers can dramatically decrease the risks of having a motor vehicle accident and ultimately, save more lives that could potentially be lost in those accidents. So, as you can see, safe drivers really are heroes!
