Education for Those on the Road
One thing that most of us here in the United States share is that we can or do drive. It seems like a simple concept, but it has led to countless accidents and many deaths. This is why driver education is so important. Without this education, there would be even more deaths added each year to the already 34,000 people. There have been great ways to incorporate more driver education through the form of a class that students can take at school. Some schools offer a class to students that teaches them about many of the rules that come with driving. In turn, completing this class insurance agencies lower their insurance rate, making it a win-win for everyone.
Several solutions could help to cut down driving-related deaths. One solution is to require all schools to offer driver’s ed classes and require students to take the class and pass to be able to have a license. This will allow students to learn the rules of the road and allow them easy access to do so without going to terrible lengths to achieve this. Another solution is that every few years people should have to take a driver’s test just like how they have to renew their driver’s license. This way they can refresh their knowledge of rules and if new ones are added it will give them a chance to learn them better. This is especially important for the elderly who may not be as familiar with different rules as opposed to younger people. Another idea is to come up with a way that the only way a person’s phone will work in a car is if they get an emergency call maybe by a certain type of programming. This will prevent them from being distracted while driving. The government could also give more money to street departments that are in charge of maintaining the roads, especially during the winter months. This would hopefully cut back on the accidents that occur because of the weather since distracted driving is just one reason there are so many accidents. Another idea could be to try and cut down on the size of a driver’s blind spots, especially in semi trucks, that way they are more likely to see oncoming cars and not run into them. Also, there should be harsher penalties for traffic violations, like speeding, running red lights, and DUI’s. This could prevent people from committing these things the harsher the punishment is to commit them.
I have never personally been in a car accident, but I have seen my fair share of friends and family members driving irresponsibly. Most of it is texting or trying to find a different song to listen to through an app on their phone. I have also seen many accident sights as I was driving by and wonder how some of them could even happen because as long as the drivers were paying attention that could have been avoided.
I can become a better driver by not getting on my phone to change the music I’m listening to. Another way is to wait and text people until I have reached my destination. Also, I can follow the speed limit much more closely. Another way is I can limit my night driving this way I do not run the risk of becoming tired and it is much easier to see my surroundings during the day. I can also help my friends and family to be safer drivers in many ways. I can read them text messages if they allow me to so that they do not have to look at their phone to read or respond to a message. I could also offer to change the music if they want me to instead of them doing it themselves. Another way I can help them is to inform them of different things happening in our surroundings that they may not see like deer or oncoming cars in their blind spots. I can also make sure to remind them to always put their set belts on in case of a crash.
There are many reasons why driver’s education is so important, especially in today’s world where so many do drive. An increase in driver education will hopefully bring the number of deaths in accidents per year down. Even if it’s just a few hundred more that is a few hundred people that will still get to be with their loved ones. I am going to do my part to help make sure my family and friends are safe and do not become someone who is involved in a deadly crash or the victim of one.
