A Journey Towards Safer Roads
In the earlier days of the automotive industry, the hopeful desire to travel by modes of more reliable and faster transportation became the dream for many. The idea of safety precautions were thrown to the wind and the streets were filled with reckless drivers and tragic accidents. Families were torn apart, dreams were shattered, and the community was in despair. However, the introduction of a driver education program became a main solution to the safety problems that arose due to the lack of precautions set in stone. This program not only taught the technical skills of driving, but also instilled a deep sense of responsibility and awareness in every student. Through engaging and interactive classes, young drivers were educated about the potential consequences of their actions on the road. They learned the importance of defensive driving, the dangers of distracted driving, and the significance of obeying traffic rules. As a result, the number of deaths caused by reckless driving dramatically decreased. The initial towns to implement this program transformed into a safe haven where families could confidently send their loved ones out on the roads. The success of the driver education program inspired neighboring towns to implement similar initiatives, leading to a ripple effect of positive change across the region. In which today, these programs are a necessity and prerequisite before any dream-filled new driver steps into the driver seat of a car with their license.
Now this program has proven to not be fool-proof as many people even in today’s society continuously lose loved-ones to the dangerous outcomes of tragic car accidents. I am lucky to not be one of these people, but the possibility is still very high. Many of the people that I value tremendously are not as careful when driving as they should be and have been in accidents that were luckily not catastrophic, but did result in a hit to their insurance. I am forever grateful that the few accidents my parents have been in have resulted in no injury other than a few scratches to their car, but the idea that these outcomes could have been drastically different is very concerning. We are in a society where there is advanced technology and innovation at our fingertips, but the disregard to safety is what enables car accidents to happen. From being distracted by those in your car or driving on little-to-no sleep after working for twelve hours straight, the distractions can pile up and the outcomes could result in tragedy.
These instances being said I am determined to try and make a difference in the way those around me look at driving on the bustling roads of my hometown. I want those around me to understand the power of our actions in shaping the lives of others. However, this change has to start with the decisions I make myself because I can admit that I am not perfect all the time when I am driving. I can battle this irresponsibility by ensuring that I always buckle up when I am in any vehicle, never drive if I am impaired in any way, and limit distractions by putting my phone away when I am driving. However, I can utilize not only my own decision making but also my desire to protect those I care about to educate them on becoming safer drivers. By voicing my distress towards their safety I can ensure that they are more observant of their surroundings and continuously utilize defensive driving habits.
This insistence to educate those around me can also be developed into a community wide campaign in which those that share the passion to keep our roads safe can educate those around us on the devastating consequences of not adhering to the rules of the road by sharing impactful road accidents from numerous first-hand accounts. By raising awareness in the community, there will be a ripple effect in those understanding the responsibility associated with obtaining a driver’s license and inspire those around us to be more cautious on the roads. These efforts can eventually promote a positive change in the community, as awareness will lead to accidents decreasing and the chaotic streets to become a safe haven for all.
Therefore, the small steps taken to educate those around us can have a more profound effect than originally believed. This is due to the capabilities of a single individual making a step toward a more responsible lifestyle, leading to a plethora of individuals making change in their own way as we can all contribute to a world where roads are no longer a battlefield but a pathway to safety and harmony.
