Educating drivers

When you live in a place like Houston, Texas, driving becomes an essential part of getting to and from places. It’s the activity that helps us get to school, work, parks, and anywhere else you desire to go. While driving can be a blessing at times, more times than not it comes with a heavy burden. It is only an unspoken agreement between you and your fellow drivers safe from certain death.

For most people, drivers ed sets the building blocks for road safety. It is some peoples first experience in learning what driving is like. With it you are able to learn the fundamentals of driving, learn the meanings behind different road signs, and learn basic rules of the road. Learning these things from drivers ed increases the safety of other drivers and helps decrease the deaths caused by driving.

The first thing you learn while in drivers ed is the fundamentals which include how to actually work you vehicle, and what different signs mean. With these lessons, the student is able to feel more and more comfortable with the idea of driving the open road and knowing what to do when seeing the signs. This comfort brought with knowing basic drivers helps protect every driver on the open road.

Another thing that drivers emphasizes is the necessity of not drinking while under the influence of any substance. During my time in drivers ed, they showed people who have been affected by drinking under the influence. These story’s ranged from someone coming out a little scratched but a lesson learned, to people whose whole life turned upside down with their injuries. This emphasis on the dangers of drinking while intoxicated helps to keep everyone on the road out of harm’s way.

In order to reduce the number if deaths caused by driving related accidents is to make drivers ed more accessible by offering it as a class at schools. By doing this it makes it to where students who can easily find a class. Another way to reduce the numbers of death is to cater the drivers ed course to the type of car that the students will most likely drive. For example, when in drivers ed, I was taught how to use a gas powered car but when I got my parents car as my first, it was an electric car. For the most part they are both their but somethings here and there are different. Another example could be how trucks and vans are different than driving a car.

My sister, who is about 6 years older than me, used to be the prime example of someone who is an irresponsible driver. She would constantly drive over the speed limit, text while driving, and perform other acts of distracted driving. She was told over and over again by my family that she should not continue with this way of driving but still continued. It wasn’t until she had nearly missed hitting a truck due to her texting with me in the car when she decided to change her way of driving. After this incident, she changed her ways for the most part, she stopped driving while texting but still continues to speed.

As for me, I also learned from my sister on what not to do when I’m driving on the road. I don’t text while driving, I stay focused on the road, and check my mirrors often but one habit I find myself doing is going over the speed limit. This is a dangerous that puts everyone on the road lives in danger. To combat this habit of mine, the first step is to realize when I’m doing it and immediately slow down to meet the speed limit. I also combat this by people telling me when I am going over the speed limit when I have a passenger in the car and then proceeding to slow down.

Driving is an important skill to have in today’s world due to its necessity to bring people to and from places such as work, school, and other cities. To learn this skill it is vital to go to drivers education as a way to feel more comfortable when first getting on the road, learning the basics of operating a car, and learning the burden that can come with being able to drive on the open road. Even with drivers ed, there are still bad driving habits that people pick up when driving for a while such as speeding, the important thing is to recognize these habits and work on fixing them.
