Driver Education Essay

It is important to have driving education. Many people may view driving as a simple and enjoyable activity, but the truth is that it requires a high level of focus, awareness, and knowledge of the rules of the road. Without the proper driving education, individuals are more likely to put themselves and others at risk while behind the wheel. One of the key reasons why driving education is crucial is that it provides individuals with the necessary knowledge to understand and interpret road signs and signals. Without this knowledge, drivers may not be able to navigate the roads safely and effectively, leading to confusion, mistakes, and potentially dangerous situations. Additionally, driving education teaches individuals how to respond to different scenarios, such as malfunctioning traffic lights or adverse weather conditions like ice on the road. This knowledge is vital for ensuring that drivers can adapt to unexpected situations and make the right decisions to avoid accidents. To reduce the number of deaths related to driving, we should start having people take driver’s tests maybe every 5 or 10 years to make sure they remember all the rules on the road. Now that might seem over the top and you might think, “but they’ve been driving for a long time now so surely they’ve gotten better at driving, not worse,” and I don’t agree with that. People slowly over time start to break the small laws we have little by little and eventually completely forget about it. Think of a stop sign. When you start driving initially you stop at every stop sign. Then, slowly you become less and less scared of stopping completely at a stop sign, so you start doing rolling stops. Then you become comfortable with that so it becomes just looking both ways and not stopping if the coast is clear. People get so used to not stopping all the way they eventually begin not stopping completely, causing wrecks and crashes. Similarly, the issue of running red lights is another example of how driving behavior can deteriorate over time. Many drivers may start to push the limits by running yellow lights, which can lead to dangerous situations if the light turns red before they clear the intersection. These behaviors not only put the driver at risk but also endanger the lives of others on the road. I remember I was once in a crash in my dads truck. We were on our way to the deer lease to go hunting and it had just started raining while we were on the highway. There was a dude behind us that was not slowing down and since the road was slippery from the oil and rain mixing together, he lost control of his car. By the time he stopped, my dads car had already been rear ended. The truck started to spin out of control and we almost went over the railing. That could’ve been prevented if the car had slowed down after realizing it was raining. Another time I can remember was when I was driving to school I was stuck in stop and go traffic. I knew i shouldn’t have been but i was on my phone while slowly going forward and i had hit a car in front of me. Thankfully it wasn’t a big bump and neither car was damaged, but I was freaking out since it was my first wreck I was in while I was the one driving. People have started using their ear view cameras as an alternative to their mirrors. While I agree you should use the rear view camera, you should also use the mirrors with it. This can be very dangerous. There could be something the camera can’t see, or a car might not see you backing out and crash into you, or maybe you will hit a pedestrian. To become a better driver myself I have started putting my phone in my car cubby to make sure I can’t just grab it anytime I want. I also make sure to tell my brain that if there’s a stop sign, to stop completely, so I don’t get used to not stopping all the way. In conclusion, driving education is crucial for making sure we have safe roads. By providing the necessary knowledge and skills to interpret road signs and signals, respond to various driving scenarios, and maintain safe driving practices, driving education plays a big role in reducing the risk of accidents and ensuring the safety of all road users. Furthermore, the idea of periodic drivers tests will help people remember the rules of the road over time.
