In the Driver’s Seat: A Journey Towards Safer Roads

On a damp evening in May 2016, as my siblings and I sat clustered around the television in our living room in Nigeria, the phone rang. It was my father, his voice trembling over the line from a highway stretching between Lagos and Port Harcourt. “I’ve been in an accident,” he whispered, the words cutting through the mundane buzz of evening shows. That call etched a before and after in our family’s life, bringing home the stark realities of driving on Nigerian roads.

My father had been on his way back from Lagos, his car laden with gifts, a tangible expression of his love for us waiting eagerly at home. But as he navigated the treacherous stretch back to Port Harcourt, a car, hurtling at reckless speeds, crashed into his. The impact was catastrophic. His car flipped multiple times in a horrifying dance of metal and glass, a nightmare unfolding in the span of heartbeats. Miraculously, his seatbelt clung to him, a slender thread between life and death. When the world finally stopped spinning, amidst the chaos of shattered windows and crumpled doors, it was this simple device that saved his life.

The aftermath was a vivid tableau of what could have been lost—the road was strewn with the gifts he’d been bringing, symbols of affection transformed into debris along the asphalt. Frantically, we rushed to the hospital to be by his side as he was evaluated for injuries. The drive to the hospital was tense; every car that zoomed by, every sharp turn, echoed the trauma of my father’s accident, heightening the fear and anxiety that clung to us as we navigated the roads that had almost claimed his life. Amidst the tension of emergency rooms and the relief of his survival, we learned the tragic news that the other driver involved in the crash had not survived.

This harrowing experience brought to light, a grim statistic: in America and indeed across the globe, including Nigeria, thousands lose their lives on the roads each year—needlessly, preventably.

Now residing in America, the realities of road safety have only become more pronounced. Here, I have witnessed firsthand the devastating effects of driving under the influence, with drunk drivers causing irreparable harm to families just like mine. I’ve seen cars slip on ice, watched young drivers distracted by their devices, and heard the sirens blare too many times as they rushed to another preventable scene.

Driver education, I realized, is more than a curriculum; it is a lifesaver. It is as crucial as the seatbelt that saved my father. This education equips drivers not just with the skills to drive, but with an understanding of the responsibility that comes with steering a vehicle. We need more than basic driving lessons; we need comprehensive education that addresses high-speed management, evasive maneuvering, and emergency responsiveness, especially vital on the unpredictable roads in Nigeria and necessary in the diverse driving conditions of the United States.

To reduce these tragedies, I advocate for robust driver education programs, rigorous enforcement of traffic laws, and heightened public awareness campaigns. Advanced simulators and defensive driving courses should be accessible to prepare drivers better for the realities of our roads. Each driver educated is a potential life saved.

In my journey toward fostering safer driving environments, I began volunteering with local road safety campaigns. I share my father’s story to illustrate the critical importance of road safety measures like wearing seatbelts and driving within speed limits. I encourage my peers to practice vigilant, defensive driving techniques and to respect life on the roads.

My engagement with road safety has extended into my academic pursuits. At my university in America, I lead initiatives that focus on integrating road safety into public health dialogues, emphasizing the impact of road accidents on community health and well-being. This perspective underlines the broader implications of road safety, linking it not just to personal loss but to community resilience and public health. Additionally, I have undertaken research projects that analyze traffic accident data to identify high-risk zones and suggest infrastructural improvements. My findings have been shared with local authorities and have sparked discussions on urban planning and safety enhancements in several high-risk areas.
