Steering Towards Safety: Overcoming Distracted Driving Habits

Driving is an essential aspect of daily life for many, it offers independence and convenience. However, with this privilege comes responsibility: ensuring the safety of oneself and others on the road. Distracted driving has become a big issue, particularly among young drivers. As a teenager in Kansas, I quickly discovered the challenges associated with maintaining focus while behind the wheel. My personal experiences with distracted driving, have significantly shaped my perspective and guided me to eliminate these dangerous habits. This essay shows my journey of recognizing my distracted driving behaviors and the measures I have implemented to ensure safer driving practices.

My journey with distracted driving began after I received my permit at age fourteen. Perhaps if I had been more mature, older, and wiser, I would have had more respect and discipline for the road. In the state of Kansas, obtaining a driver’s license requires only a class to learn the rules of the road, driving lessons from a state instructor, and fifty recorded hours of driving. Looking back, this seems too easy. I believe driving courses need to be more rigorous, and drivers under the age of twenty-two should be evaluated every other year on their driving skills.

Despite initial caution, over time, I developed several distracting habits that eventually caused significant hardship in my life. My most frequent distractions included using my phone while driving, engaging in conversations with passengers, and not focusing enough on the road ahead. These habits culminated in two significant accidents, teaching me valuable lessons and prompting me to change my behavior.

The first accident occurred on a warm summer day, just before my eighteenth birthday and the start of my senior year. I was driving to work when another driver swerved onto the highway, causing everyone to slam on their brakes. I did not have enough time to stop and avoid a collision, so I swerved into another lane and crashed into a highway median. Fortunately, no one was injured, but I lost all my savings accumulated over two summers to buy a new car. This experience should have been a wake-up call, but my distracted driving habits persisted.

Three months later, I was involved in another accident entirely of my own doing. While talking to my mom on the phone, I dropped it onto the car floor. As I reached down to grab it, I crashed into another vehicle. The sound of the collision shattered not only my car but also my confidence. The other car was undamaged, but my vehicle looked like it had been hit by a semi-truck. This incident was a turning point, leading me to seriously contemplate my driving habits and their consequences.

To address my distracted driving habits, I implemented a few concrete steps. Firstly, I resolved to eliminate phone use while driving. I now put my phone on “Do Not Disturb” mode and keep it in the glove compartment, out of sight and out of mind. This prevents me from being tempted to check messages or answer calls while driving. Secondly, I maintain a safe distance from other vehicles to allow ample reaction time. I keep a minimum of a four-car distance from the vehicle ahead of me and, at red lights, at least a one-car distance. This practice helps me stay focused on the road and reduces the likelihood of sudden stops leading to accidents. Thirdly, I minimize interior distractions by keeping the radio volume low and limiting conversations with passengers. This ensures that my attention remains on driving rather than on engaging in distracting activities.

These measures have significantly improved my driving habits, making me more attentive and cautious on the road. Additionally, my experience shadowing various hospital departments during my senior year further reinforced the importance of safe driving. I witnessed the aftermath of motor vehicle accidents. The patient had completed fractured both bones in his left leg. His injuries work caused by another driver being distracted, and not seeing him on his motorcycle. An accidednt caused by another driver’s negligence, made me realize the devastating impact of inattention.

Reflecting on my journey, the consequences of distracted driving have left a lasting impact on my life. The emotional toll and realization of how my actions could have harmed others were profound. These experiences have taught me the value of vigilance and responsibility. With the support of my parents and a renewed commitment to safe driving, I am determined to avoid distractions and focus on the road ahead. I hope my story serves as a reminder to others about the dangers of distracted driving and inspires them to adopt safer practices. Through these changes, I strive to contribute to a future where every journey is a safe one.
