XC Driving Essay

I earned my driving license on my 17th birthday and as a new driver, the driver education I received in school taught me the rules of the road which has helped prevent accidents that I think are sometimes cause by the ignorance of traffic laws.

The defensive driving techniques I learned instilled defensive driving skills that allow me to anticipate potential hazards and respond appropriately. These instructions also highlighted the dangers of distracted driving, driving under the influence and speeding. In my opinion, distracted driving happens often, especially among young adults.

With behind the wheel instruction I gained the hands on experience which helped to build my confidence and control of the vehicle. This is especially important when driving in congested cities and on highways where drivers are typically aggressive. Understanding the vehicle you are driving is also an important step to take to reduce the number of accidents. When the driver understands the vehicle he/she is operating, you are able to make better decision in emergencies depending on the conditions.

In my opinion, we can all help in reducing the number of deaths related to driving by doing a few things.

  • Taking yearly refresher reading courses would provide drivers with the latest information, ensuring they are aware of new laws and practices.

  • Regularly addressing skill deterioration since even experienced drivers may lose some of their driving skills. A course would help identify and correct deficiencies. I would even suggest mandating this kind of training for the senior population as reflexes slow down with age.

  • Participating in on-going defensive driving courses to emphasize techniques to help drivers anticipate and respond to potential road hazards. Regular training can also reinforce safe driving habits and vigilance.

  • Refraining from distractions, specifically mobile and handle held devices. Most of us use GPS for navigation purposes, and thankfully, there are features on the phone that you can use, like Do Not Disturb mode, to keep from getting texts and calls while driving.

  • Refraining from drug and alcohol use at all times.

  • Partnering with a designated driver.

  • Driving with patience, no aggression.

  • No tailgating.

If we all participate in the above, from new drivers to the more experienced drivers, I think we can make a significant impact on reducing the amount of vehicle accidents in the long run.

Since living in New Jersey, I have seen the result of automobile accidents. Some have been tragic while others have been fender-benders. Nonetheless, each accident will leave an impact on all drivers, passengers and passersby.

As a new driver, I’ve encountered a few scares on the road. Aggressive drivers who tailgate and want to bully you through a stop sign or cut in front without signaling. At one point I had a very angry man almost run me off the road because he felt I wasn’t going fast enough in a residential area. After school driving is also an important time to be on alert. When leaving the school parking lot, many students are talking and walking and looking at their phones not paying attention to the traffic. This requires the drivers to be even more careful. We also have the school buses making continuous stops. As a driver, it is my responsibility to be watchful and mindful of kids crossing and oncoming traffic.

At dusk, we see a lot of deer and other animals crossing. It is important to be on high alert as they dash out in front of cars leaving very little time for reaction.

Intersections and highways are just as important to consider since response time is crucial in a potentially hazardous scenario.

As I drive daily, I rely on what I’ve learned in school and on the road. I make sure there are no distractions and I stay alert. I surround myself with people who respect the laws and abide by them. My parents encourage safety first and a clear mind when I am on the road. They remind me that I should never drive in a rush, that I should never be a passenger to anyone that has consumed drugs and/or alcohol and that I can always call an Uber to be picked up when necessary.

I encourage my friends who are not yet of driving age, to pay attention to the road when they are in a vehicle. By doing so, I’ve learned to get around a few places without utilizing the navigation system and this helps to minimize distractions.

Understanding that driving is not only a privilege but a responsibility to yourself and to those on the road is something to keep in mind.
