2025 Drivers Education Scholarship

Have you ever wondered how you or someone else you are close with could become a better driver? Well here are some questions and answers that might help you or the people that need the help!

What is the importance of driver education in reducing the number deaths as a result of driving?

Having the ability to learn and know the roads and knowing what you are doing and how to use defensive driving is always helpful. When you are first learning to drive you have no clue what you are doing, so that is when driving education comes into play! Driving school will teach you better driving techniques and make you aware of the rules of the road. Driving school also reduces the number of fatal accidents and violations. Teens who take driving lessons are less likely to receive traffic violations or be involved in crashes.

What steps can be taken to reduce the number of deaths related to driving?

Avoiding distractions like cell phones, eating or having loud music can distract any driver. A new driver or a driver that has already been driving. Cell phones are the biggest distraction that are most likely to injure or kill drivers. Avoid using alcohol, drugs or anything that can put you under the influence and make you less aware or short span of your driving or others around you. Reducing your speed can also save a lot of heartache. Not speeding from one place to another can get you there safer, rather than you speeding and you never making it to your destination. Staying in your lane is also part of staying focused and not running into other people’s lanes to swerve them off the road or swipe them while you’re driving. Driving with both hands on the wheel helps if you are going fast, on bumpy roads, wet roads, or driving in any conditions because you are most likely to be able to get yourself back straight on the road with both hands on the wheel rather than one hand. Finally, wearing your seat belt can save your life as well. If you are in a crash and have a bad impact if you are wearing your seat belt the belt will stop, you from hitting the steering wheel or any other objects in the car.

What steps can you take to be a better and safer driver as well as help others become safer on the road?

To be a better and safer driver you have to be a defensive driver. When being defensive you are taking others in to consideration and acknowledging them as a potential risk. All drivers will not follow the rules and can cause you to have an accident with them or someone else. Avoid distractions. Avoiding distractions like using your phone, eating or drinking while driving can cause you to wreck with someone or something. When you are driving, don’t mess with the radeo or the air conditioning as it can cause you to take your eyes off the road and crash. Having your music to loud can also cause a distraction for you not being able to focus. Other passengers can also become a distraction. Following all the basic traffic laws. Drive the speed limit, don’t go to fast but also don’t go to slow. Obey the traffic signs. Maintaining a safe distance from the car in front of you in case they stop, or if someone hits you from behind you won’t hit the car in front of you. Another big thing to avoid is being under the influence of any kind of drugs while driving. The last tip to make sure you and others are safe is to always check your blind spots before changing in to other lanes or passing someone. Doing so will make sure you don’t crash in to someone else or make some one swerve off the road.

Have you ever had an experience in being in a car accident or have seen your friends or family members driving irresponsibly?

In my own experience I have only witnessed more aggressive driving than being in any kind of crash. My brother’s girlfriend at the time was in a bad accident where she had to re-learn a bunch of everyday things. She had to re-learn how to walk, talk, eat, breathe, using the bathroom, etc. All of this could have been avoided if she was not distracted by her phone.

In conclusion, the key to being a good and safe driver is to be defensive, focused on nothing but the road, and being alert of yourself and others surrounding you.
