Drive Intentionally Because You Matter
Driver’s education provides students and adults with the proper tools not only to operate a vehicle safely, but also to understand the rules of the road. Just as with any part of life that has rules, there’s a reason those rules exist. In the case of driver’s education, these rules are in place to protect you as the driver, as well as other motorists and pedestrians. Having an instructor guide you through questions or concerns when learning the rules of the road or driving on the roads significantly reduces the likelihood of causing an accident.
There are several steps to reducing the number of driving-related fatalities. First, avoid driving under the influence. Never consume alcoholic beverages or drugs and get behind the wheel. Doing that is completely reckless and dangerous. In today’s day and age, there are so many other options to utilize if one does choose to partake in those activities. Call an Uber, Lyft, family member or friend to reduce the risk of someone being injured or killed senselessly. Second, put your phone down while driving. There is no text, email, snap, or other message that is worth your life or the lives of others. It’s as simple as setting your phone to delay your messages. Another option is to set an auto-generated response “I am driving. I will get back to you later.” Third, do not get behind the wheel if you are overly tired. Fatigued driving is also impaired driving. Studies have shown that driving when excessively tired is the equivalent of driving while under the influence. Some simple solutions for this could be as easy as delaying your trip, pulling to a safe location to take a short nap, or arranging for another mode of transportation. Fourth, stay focused and alert while driving on the road. Modern-day distractions make it easy for your mind to wander. There are so many demands on people’s time, it’s easy to let those things consume your thought process and focus while driving. Whether you are thinking about plans with friends later, an assignment that needs to be completed, upcoming appointments, etc., losing focus can be dangerous. When driving, keep your attention on the road, speed limits, traffic conditions, and signage to ensure you will arrive at your destination safely.
When I was in elementary school, my dad, sister, and I were on our way to Office Depot to purchase crayons when we were involved in a car accident. The driver behind us was distracted by their phone and rear-ended our truck, causing us to crash into the car in front of us. This experience reinforced the importance of staying attentive while driving to prevent unnecessary accidents. Of course, he apologized, but this still didn’t take the fear away from everyone involved. This was terrifying to me as a child because the airbags deployed and all the particles filled the air. The sounds of the crunching bumpers and the smell of the airbag are things I will never forget. Thankfully, my parents fully believe in appropriate safety measures. I was in my booster seat all buckled up. My little sister was in her car seat securely fastened. My dad was injured because the airbag deployed on his arm leaving debris sticking out of his arm. I was so thankful that my family was ok. I was equally relieved to see my mom when she made it to the scene. Simply knowing how I felt then has changed how I drive as an 18-year-old.
As a fairly new driver, I have already made it my commitment to make wise decisions when it comes to driving. Tailgating is only for Kansas City Chiefs football games, not for the road. Therefore, I always keep my distance from the cars around me. Let’s be honest, no one wants a speeding ticket either, so I simply monitor my speed to ensure I am obeying the law. My phone is always placed in driving mode and is out of sight while I am driving. This prevents any temptation to just check that text message really quickly. I do not participate in any drug or alcohol use because of my own goals and aspirations to become an aerospace engineer. Additionally, putting those chemicals and toxins into my body are of no interest to me. Equally as important, I am mindful when driving my car for any changes in the mechanics of the vehicle. Checking to see that my tires have the proper amount of air when the weather changes, ensuring that my car has plenty of gas before I go anywhere, and making sure my oil gets changed on time also prevents some hazards on the road. Whenever my friends and I are planning to go anywhere I simply encourage them to get us there safely by following the rules of the road and keeping distractions to a minimum. If they are expecting an important text, I offer to be their personal secretary and answer for them, allowing them to keep their focus on reaching our destination safely. Always remember to drive intentionally because you matter.
