Passenger’s Guide to Drivers Ed
Ah,
the joys of driving! The feelings of independence, liberation, and
excitement when we finally gain the ability to drive (with or without
a legal guardian). But it’s not all fun and games. The idea of
being behind the wheel can intimidate even the most fearless of
humanity. There are a lot of things that can go wrong. And it’s
important to have plans for everything that could inconvenience you
or anyone with you on your trip.
One
good idea is to ride with someone who has plenty of experience when
it comes to driving. The advice of a friend or relative who’s been
behind the wheel for some time should always be welcome, and an extra
set of eyes for any blind spots is always handy.
Another
good idea (for those of legal drinking age) is to have a designated
driver for whenever you go to a bar, alone or with company. Having
someone who is clear-headed and knows how to navigate the surrounding
neighborhood is always a good idea. A good alternative for having a
designated driver is using a cab service, such as Uber or Lyft. This
way, you don’t accidently stumble into the road, or into people or
other things on the sidewalk.
The
last piece of advice is to always keep the drivers training book
(which gives you the rules of signs and how to move through the right
lanes) on/near you at all times, even when you get some experience
and get less spooked at the idea of driving. It’s always good to
have the basics with you when you don’t have a physical teacher
with you.
Last
piece of advice: Use GPS. Getting lost sucks, whether you’ve driven
little or a lot.
