Disillusioned
Driving

It
is essential that drivers are educated properly in order to reduce
the number of deaths. In the past, we relied on our parents or public
transportation to take us places; finally being able to drive gives
us a great sense of freedom. We drive quickly and carelessly because
we are finally able to experience this new freedom, but we forget to
think about how it affects others. We continue recklessly driving and
because we have never been in an accident, we believe ourselves to be
great drivers, but that is only an illusion. Uneducated drivers are
shrouded by the disillusioned idea that they are “perfect”
drivers and neglect their mistakes.

The
presence of mind, which describes the increased state of awareness,
of a driver is important to reduce the number of deaths related to
driving. For instance, drivers regularly point out the mistakes of
other drivers, which usually results in their road rage. These
drivers are too fixated on the mistakes that others cause, which
makes them blind to their own mistakes. Instead, they should be
thinking about what they can do to avoid potential causing an
accident. In order to increase the presence of mind of these drivers,
we should educate future drivers to think about their own mistakes by
having them question themselves, such as: “How can I ensure that
other drivers know that I want to switch lanes ahead of time?”,
rather than blaming others. As a result, drivers will develop a
growth mindset by considering how they can improve their own driving
experience. Ultimately, young drivers will learn the role that they
play towards the rest of the traffic and environment by being more
aware in their increased state of mind.

The
scariest part of the dark is not the lack of light, but what lies in
the unknown. I came to this simple, yet elaborate truth because of my
fear of the dark; this notion applies to my reckless driving
incident. I was the passenger to my friend’s irresponsible and rash
driving. He became impatient from the unending traffic and entered a
long stretch towards the left turn lane as another car was exiting,
his vision was obstructed and he didn’t have the foresight to avoid
it. It all happened in slow motion, I saw the unalarmed face of the
child in the car seat drift into view. My friend was luckily able to
swerve away from the incoming car, but I almost became the victim of
another teenage driving car accident – I almost became involved
with the death of an innocent child. Even with his two months of
driving, he believed that he had all the experience and knowledge to
be the perfect driver; however, it was the disillusionment that he
was the ideal driver which nearly led to many innocent deaths. In
essence, the darkness that we create in ourselves is the reason we
need to be careful and conscientious drivers.
