Being
able to drive a car is an amazing skill to have and after I moved to
America I observed that being able to drive by yourself basically
gives you freedom. Teen isn’t dependable on parents to drive them
around, but one of the differences between my homeland and America
was the age at which people were able to start driving. In Poland, a
person can start driving and take driving classes at 18 and in
America at 16. I found this age really young and I don’t feel that
teens that just turned 16 should be able to drive around when teens
are really easy to distract with their phones. A lot of researches
shows that distraction is the most common cause of car accidents and
one of the places where people learn about paying attention to the
road and other drivers are driving school. Driving teachers teach
people about the importance and responsibility that the driver on the
road. In addition to that, I feel that school should have
presentations about driving from time to time to inform students
about the effects of distraction on the road. There should be posters
about looking at the phone during driving, around schools and other
important buildings. And in the last resort, the driving age should
be raised to 17 or 18, to try to decrease the number of irresponsible
teens on the road. I acknowledge the fact that a lot of people will
say that age has nothing to do with how responsible a person is on
the road, I agree that older people can also be distracted the same
as younger. The only car accident I have ever experienced was when I
was driving home with my friend and during a turn, a different driver
came from the opposite side and the driver was rushing and didn’t
realize that my friend was turning and both cars hit each other. The
accident was a result of distraction and rush from the stranger’s
side but shows that older people can be as distracted and
irresponsible as teens. Although, raising the driving age by one year
or two shouldn’t make that much of a difference to people, because in
American society, there are people that wait till 18 years old to get
their permit. Lastly, the only thing that I can personality do as a
person who doesn’t drive yet is being a respectful passenger and
making sure that the driver is never looking at his/her phone during
the ride.
