It’s a Great Day to Save Lives
Throughout
the United States the ages to obtain a learners permit ranges from
fourteen to sixteen years old. With individuals this young on the
road it is crucial to inform them about the great responsibility that
comes with driving any type of vehicle. It is estimated that twelve
percent of fatal accidents involving distracted drivers were teens.
Therefore, drivers ed is essential to inform new drivers about
the necessity of safe driving. Also, drivers ed is fundamental
in order to inform the new drivers about the aftermath of an
accident. From severe medical conditions to potential jail time,
drivers ed provides the opportunity to inform and raise
awareness about safe driving in an effort to reduce the number of
deaths from driving.
There
are numerous solutions to help reduce the number of driving related
deaths. First and foremost, drivers ed curriculum is the most
important solution. New drivers are very impressionable because there
is still an air of nervousness that comes with driving a car.
Therefore it is crucial to expose these new drivers to the aftermath
of car accidents, specifically those that lead to death. In addition,
drivers ed provides the resources to demonstrate how avoidable
distracted driving is, such as putting their phone on do not disturb
when driving. Another step that can be taken to reduce driving
related deaths is to ensure that every driver at all ages understands
the immense responsibility that comes with driving a car. The car
insurance company I use provides an annual opportunity to follow a
short online course that discusses the laws of the road and the
dangers of driving irresponsibly. After completing this course there
is a discount on my insurance. If this opportunity was available to
all drivers it may inform older drivers on small driving laws they
may have forgotten, making the roads safer and potentially saving
lives.
I
am very fortunate that I have never been in a position where I have
felt unsafe in a car due to an irresponsible driver. This is likely
because my family and close friends have a very deep understanding of
the seriousness of operating a car and the lives that are at risk
every time they are behind the wheel.
Steps
I can take to be a better and safer driver are to ensure that I am
always well rested and focused before driving a car. In addition,
small changes can make a huge difference. For example, I could leave
a pair of sneakers in my car at all times to ensure that I have
proper shoes to operate the vehicle. A small mistake like wearing
flip flops when driving could be deadly. In addition, there are many
ways to help others be safer drivers as well. For example, sharing
tips that help you keep focused is a great way to compare and
possibly even improve on driving techniques with a friend.
