A Better Driver’s Education

The Importance of Driver Education

We have all been in a scary situation on the road whether we were driving or not, it can still be a very dangerous and fatal outcome. That is why driver education is so important. We are humans and we are going to make mistakes but if we can take every step in being as safe as possible on the road, we could be the ones saving lives every day. In most of my experiences on the road, it is usually someone, myself included, that is distracted or just plainly not thinking. I can give you a perfect example of how driver education is not taken seriously enough. I was 15 years old and first learning how to drive in my Driver’s Education class. We were at the portion of the class where a group of students all go with a teacher and take turns driving while being graded. I was the kid that was interested and trying to learn to rules of the road at like 12 years old. Which means by the time I was 15, I was ready to get behind the wheel of that car. I passed my driving test but what concerned me were the other students in the car. There were a few students who could barely stay in the lane while changing lanes, swerving, jerking the steering wheel, and speeding and yet they still passed along with me. This experience has stayed with me ever since I was 15 years old and I am 23 now. I will never forget this experience because it makes me more cautious on the road knowing that students like that are driving along beside me every day.

How can we make driver education more thorough and impactful? We can all do things to be safer drivers for ourselves and others on the road. My first concern is the education program. Driver Education teachers need to be more exact with their teaching and take it more seriously. Anybody and everybody can get a drivers license these days but if we made sure drivers were fully taught and ready to be on the road, I believe we would have a significant number of less casualties and fatalities. Now, what we can do as people to make our roads safer is by doing what we are taught and sticking to it. Sometimes we get comfortable in our vehicles and we underestimate that these thousand pounds of metal can really do. They can hurt and they can kill and we are the ones behind that wheel controlling that car and it is on us to be safer drivers so that other can hopefully follow in your shoes and do the same. I learned from my parents how to be a safe driver and I am going to make sure my kids learn to same from me. We can do things to make sure we are not as distracted in the care such as, put down your phones, turn down the radio, be aware of cars and people and things around you and more importantly, do not be in a hurry to be anywhere. The most important thing is that you and your loved ones get to where you are going and you are safe.
