The Importance of Safe Driving

It’s a warm sunny day two friends are heading to grab some supper before they begin their evening festivities. They are playing some new pop songs that came on the radio. The driver looks over at her friend who is taking a picture of them to post on Instagram. Boom! Bang! Boom!  Dust now fills the air. The girls are looking at the back of a red pickup that now has dent in the back of it. The girls begin crying in fear. Luckily this is just a story, but unfortunately situations like this happen more than they should. This shows how important it is for our society to have driver’s education and understand the importance of not driving distracted. 

Driver’s education is important in lowering the number of deaths that happen as a result of driving. Driver’s education has many positives such as making a time for children to learn how to drive and lowering the number of deaths that happen from accidents. Not all children have an equal opportunity to have practice driving since some children might not have parents at home all the time. Driver’s education can provide at least a few hours that a child might be able to drive with an instructor and teach them the proper way to drive through towns and on highways. Without driver’s education some children might not get very much experience of driving before they can drive on their own. These type of situations are some causes to the number of deaths from accidents. If children aren’t getting enough practicing and being taught they won’t know how to handle a vehicle correctly and it can end up hurting them or other drivers. The most important thing that can come from children taking driver’s education is the lower number of accidents. Taking driver’s education should help lower the number of accidents. If all children took driver’s education they would have knowledge of the right way to drive and handle a vehicle, which in turn would lower the number of accidents.

I think steps that should be taken to help reduce the number of deaths related to accidents is that every child in school should be informed of the consequences of distracted driving and should have to take driver’s education. I think schools should require children to take driver’s education just like they are required to take math. If all children went through driver’s education it wouldn’t stop accidents from happening but it definitely would lower them, which would extremely lower the number of deaths that come from accidents. 

Now I have been lucky, I haven’t had to experience an accident personally but I have experienced distracted driving with myself and with friends. Where I live unfortunately there as been to many accidents among teens. When have had two teens in my class die due to an accident. That is something that is hard to hear about. Knowing that if maybe they drove a little more responsibly or if the other driver was driving responsibly they would be here is something hard to think about. It just seems like a simple fix: stay focused on the road. This has made me stay focused on how I’m driving and making sure I’m being a safe driver. i have also had other friends driving irresponsibly but luckily they haven’t been in any accidents. Everyone has experienced some sort of distracted driving at some point while driving, whether it’s been being on his or her phone or a kid screaming in the backseat. All types of distracted driving can end up deadly for the driver, passengers, or other drivers on the road. Driving irresponsibly is a type of distracted driving. Driving irresponsibly can be as simple as speeding and as extreme as driving under the influence. All these are a danger on the road and need to be prevented.

Steps I can take to be a better and safer driver would be focusing on not being distracted while driving. It can be easy to get distracted while driving even for super experienced drivers. For me personally some steps I am going to take will be to put my phone on silent so I don’t have to hear it go off which then tempts me to look at it. I am also going to make sure my radio isn’t too loud since that can be a distraction from the road. I will make sure my speed is in check so I’m not a hazard to other drivers. 

Not only is it important for me to better myself and become a safer driver it’s also important to help my friends and family become safer drivers as well. Some steps I will take is just making sure they are informed about what the consequences of their actions are. If I’m riding with someone I will make sure I’m not that distraction. Something that might be hard to do but needs to be done is I’ll make sure if I see them on their phone to call them out for it and make sure they understand it is not okay. 

I personally think driver’s education is very important and every driver should go through the course. Everyone needs to be educated on how to handle a vehicle along with how to deal with distractions while driving. Every driver needs to understand the importance of being a safe driver; not only does being a safe driver help the driver individually but it helps other drivers on the road.
