The Essentials of Safe Driving

Tracy Nguyen

Every single day people drive to work, school, stores, or see family and friends, but there are many accidents that may happen along the way. For the most part, everyone who is driving has a license and has gone through a driver education course to obtain the privilege of driving. Driver education is vital in reducing deaths because driver ed gives us the basic foundation of driving. It allows us to learn what street signs mean, what someone should do when the weather is bad, what to do when there is a pedestrian, and it teaches drivers the dos and don’ts of driving. Driver education also teaches new drivers the dangers of driving because it explains what happens when rules are not followed and it emphasizes how much of a privilege it is to actually drive.

There are many precautionary steps that can be taken to reduce the number of deaths related to driving. One of the biggest things is distracted driving. Keeping eyes on the roads can eliminate many accidents. Many people like to eat while driving, but that can hinder one’s driving because there is only one hand on the wheel and that can cause some to accidentally swerve into another lane or stop too late, which is why one should wait to get home or stop by somewhere. Many like to adjust the radio or the air conditioner/heater, but that can cause a distraction because eyes are not fully on the road, which is why those things should be adjusted before one starts driving. It is also vital to be aware of all surroundings even if you are following the law, others may not, which is why it is also essential to be cautious of the cars surrounding your car. When in parking lots or simply in the crossroads, it is important to go slow and keep in mind that the pedestrian gets the right of way and it is always better to be safe rather than rush.

I have not been in any serious accidents, but I have been in minor accidents with my parents and heard stories from others. Generally, the accidents have been caused due to other cars not being careful or aware of their surroundings. Many are speeding, not looking both ways, or are texting while driving. I have seen some of my family members drive irresponsibly at times like looking at their phone here and there or speeding.

I can be a safer driver by one trying to be as rested as I can be because sleep deprivation can also cause me to not be fully aware and awake on the road, which is dangerous. I will make sure that my mirrors, ac/heater, and seat are all adjusted so I am comfortable and not trying to adjust while driving. In addition, I would also make sure that I get the directions pulled up if I do not know where I am going. Most importantly, I will make sure that I am being cautious on the road like following basic rules, being aware of signs, and being careful of pedestrians. I want to try my best to do my part on being safe on the road because I am not only responsible for myself, but the people around me. I can also help others be safe by reminding them to not look at their phone, remind them to look around, and remind them to keep their eyes on the roads
