2020 Drivers Education Contest Essay
The importance of driver education in preventing highway accidents and fatalities is getting the correct experience. The more experience you get behind the wheel with a knowledgeable instructor dramatically increases your chances of knowing and practicing proper procedures while driving. Some accidents are inevitable, but most can be prevented by driving defensively and learning all the traffic laws and how to adhere to them.
There can be multiple steps taken to try to help lower the number of accidents on the road. First, the states can require the number of hours of education you have before acquiring your license. Have verified experience before you can obtain your license, make the programs more difficult and longer so people can prove they know traffic laws and are responsible. Second, Raising the driving age from sixteen to twenty-one so people can learn to be more accountable behind the wheel. We can’t just give licenses away so easily as there are too many deaths per year. This is something we need to take very seriously. Third and finally, have more stringent laws against using cell phones while driving as in 2018 alone, 2,841 deaths were caused by cell phones. That number causes me sadness as that’s more people killed than the Iraq war in 2019.
Yes, I have been in a car accident recently because of a reckless driver, not paying attention. I was sitting in my truck in the left lane, getting ready to turn, and someone rear ended me that wasn’t paying attention. It was an easily avoidable accident that turned into a police report if someone had just been paying attention. There are far too many cases like this that end up in injury or even death. We need to be more aware and stop giving out licenses like there a right and not a privilege. More people need to prove to society that they have earned the right to drive and not just passed a twenty-question test given out at the department of motor vehicles. This is something to be taken seriously as too many people are dying every year. This country is turning into a warzone with the number of deaths through vehicle accidents.
The most manageable steps we can take to become a better driver is to get more experience. Be trained by a certified driving professional who knows the laws and has the correct knowledge to help you navigate operating a motor vehicle. It’s not just about learning the basics. It’s about being a professional on the road. You have to know that driving is a serious obligation not only to you but to everyone else on the road with you. Most people see that driving is a right, but in reality, it’s a privilege. You have to respect all that earning your license means. It shows that you have earned the right to drive with millions of other people, and you have acquired the knowledge that you need to be safe. As new and up-and-coming drivers, we need to respect everyone around us and show they are safe not only to ourselves but also to the people around us. The road is full of so many dangers already we don’t need inexperienced drivers navigating the streets, making it entirely unsafe for the rest of society.
