The Importance of Drivers Education

I think that drivers’ education is extremely important. The roads would be much safer with educated and safe drivers on the roads. Right now, with the current laws in Michigan, you do not have to go through drivers training once you turn 18 and as long as you can pass both a written test and a road test. I do not think this is right.

I think that roads would be so much safer if everyone had to take a drivers training class to get their license. But, although it sounds easy, drivers training can be an expensive class. Drivers training classes should be more affordable for the people that can not afford it. Some people have to wait until they are 18 simply just because they can not afford the drivers training class. I think this should be changed too. Maybe, drivers training could be a class taught in high school. This would give everyone access to it and no one would have an excuse to not be an educated driver.

Drivers training is so important because of all of the things you learn. I took drivers training as soon as I possibly could. I was not even 15 years old at the time. I think this was great for me because of all the time I had to drive between taking the class and actually getting my license. I had over a year of driving with my parents before turning 16 and driving on my own. I think this greatly helped me become the driver I am. With all of the hours I had to put in, I had a lot of drives that helped me gain some experience and learn some dos and don’ts of driving.

There have been studies that prove drivers training to be greatly effective. Drivers between the age of 16 and 18 are the most likely to be in accidents. Drivers training classes do not only teach new drivers the laws and rules of the road, but it also teaches them to safely maneuver a car and how to avoid wrecks. In a study done by the University of Nebraska, research found that trained drivers were involved in less accidents and were less likely to get tickets. According to the study, if you have not taken drivers training, you are 75% more likely to be pulled over and be written a ticket. These untrained drivers are also way more likely to be involved in fatal and nonfatal accidents.

As you can see from these results and some results from other studies, there are positive outcomes from taking a drivers training class. Not only would there be more educated drivers on the road but there would also be more better drivers on the roads. I could only imagine how these statistics would also change if all of the drivers on the road were trained and educated. No matter your age, if you are new to driving, taking drivers training should be a requirement to get your license.
