Drivers
education is critical. By taking drivers ed, students learn
safe driving techniques and how to keep their focus. If they are
self-taught, they can get into the habits for distracted driving by
being on their phones or focusing on something else other than the
road which is the leading cause of crashes in the united states. From
these crashes, nine people die, and 1000s are injured every day. Many
steps can be taken to help reduce the number of deaths related to
driving. An example of these steps would be to require everyone to
take drivers ed before receiving their license no matter their age.
Another step could be making being on a cell phone while driving
illegal. Texting and driving are illegal, but that still allows
surfing the web, playing games, or scrolling through social media
while driving legal. I feel that if being on a phone while driving is
illegal and give people a punishment every time they are, it would
reduce the number of accidents related to distracted driving. They
could put something on everyone’s phone that if it turned on while
driving, they get a ticket automatically.

I have experienced a distracted driver causing a crash firsthand.
Several years ago, my dad was dropping my older sisters off at school
with me in the front seat. A driver wasn’t looking where they were
going because of being on her phone, and she crashed into us. My
dad’s car was totaled, and I ended up being injured. The crash
messed up my back and neck badly, and I had to go through physical
therapy for months. Another example where there was a distracted
driver happened to my dad. He was driving home from an out of town
job for his work. He was stopping because there was traffic in front
of him, the semi-truck being him wasn’t paying attention and
crashed into him. This caused him to have to go to the hospital for
injuries. These accidents could have been avoided if people learned
how to be safer drivers and knew if there were more significant
consequences than getting a warning.

I think there are many things as a driver I can do to be safer. I can
turn my phone off, so I don’t get tempted to respond to a text I
receive. I can make sure not to mess with the radio or pick up
anything I might drop, so I don’t take my eyes off the road. I can
help others be safer by stopping someone if I see them do something
that will distract them. I can spread information about safe driving
to try to lower the number of deaths from unsafe driving.
