Safe, Live Safe
Teens
worldwide get behind the wheel of a vehicle, oblivious to the
repercussions of bad driving habits. As once stated, “With great
power comes great responsibility.” In this scenario teens gain the
freedom and the trust of their parents by taking a step into their
newfound adult life. However, with this new freedom comes the
responsibility of being safe when behind the wheel. It is a common
mindset that people will learn with mistakes, but in this case, there
is no room for mistakes - as one small accident can be fatal.

Many
teens know - or have heard - their parents cautioning them of the
consequences of bad driving habits, however, most teens tend to throw
it aside. As a result of this, teen deaths on the road continue to
rise. By taking initiative, we can lower the death rates and create a
safer driving environment. In order to do this, I believe that
parents should take the extra step of inputting a device in their
child’s vehicle which gives a report of each trip - no matter how
close or far. With this data, parents can monitor their child’s
driving habits and always be one step ahead. The data that this
device could monitor are speed, rapid acceleration, and hard braking.
Parents could then use this information to either talk to their
children of their bad habits or reward them for their good habits on
the road.
A
personal experience of teen ignorance in the driver’s seat is when
my friend pulled out of a parking complex and turned left onto a main
road. As he was turning, a car came from his blind side and hit the
hood of his car. In addition to this, he was driving someone
illegally. Thankfully, nobody was hurt or injured, but it taught him
to look both ways more than twice before turning.
The
importance of decreasing the number of deaths on the road is to
create a safer environment for drivers of all ages, not just teens.
Since teens are the majority of drivers that cause accidents, if we
could take the extra step and reduce teen accidents, the road would
be a much safer place.
