Driving
Responsibly

When one slides behind the wheel
to drive, that person takes on responsibility for that person’s own
life as well as the lives of any others present. This is no light
subject; a wrong turn of that wheel could be the last movement one
makes. This does not mean that a driver should always think that an
accident might happen, but conscious and focused awareness of the
present fact should be a guide in careful driving. Drivers must
realize the gravity and responsibility involved with driving and take
safety precautions.

It
is very important to be educated in driving before attempting
actually driving. Driving without the proper knowledge or instruction
could cost the life of the driver and/or the lives of any passengers
present in the vehicle. A person cannot expect to become a skilled
driver without proper instructions on driving logistics. For example,
a person cannot learn how to use a stove correctly without carefully
reading the instructions on how the stove works. With more
knowledgeable drivers out on the road, instead of inexperienced
drivers who do not know what they are doing, the statistics of
accidents and fatalities could be significantly reduced.

To
reduce the number of deaths related to driving, there should be
certain restrictions applied to driving: (1) a certain age limit of
maturity should be required to attain a driver’s permit and
license; (2) an experienced and knowledgeable driver should conduct
the driving test without partiality and not pass the applicant unless
merited; and (3) a new driver should practice often on quiet streets
before driving in areas with heavy or difficult traffic; (4) a driver
should not text, not argue with another person, or not talk on the
phone if doing so impairs safe driving; (5) a driver must keep a
careful and peripheral attention of all other cars, street signals,
and pedestrians.

As
a young child, I was in a car accident with my older brother driving.
In a GMC Suburban, he and my other brother were arguing on the road
about directions and my brother driving turned left at a traffic
light without realizing that he missed the yellow arrow, and a small
car smashed into ours. We hit our heads on the windows and were
jolted in our seats, and the other driver’s hood was smashed.
Legally, it was my brother’s fault. The accident could have been
avoided if my brother driving had not distracted himself arguing and
paid better attention to the street signals and other surroundings
and thus driven more responsibly.

For
myself, I can become a better driver by keeping focused at the wheel,
not distracting myself beyond capable driving, and attending to
safety directions and other moving objects. When driving, I also
should be considerate of other drivers and not be rude or dominate
the road. If everyone observed these precautions, they would become
better drivers and accidents and deaths related to driving.
