As my father has always said, “la educación es lo que nos mueve adelante.” in other words, education is what moves us forward. Having recently completed the drivers education class, I can tell why the government made it a state requirement (I thought the break was meant to reverse). It is important for everyone to know a bit of everything, personally I’d like to know that the person I’m driving next to on the highway at 60 miles an hour is NOT going to kill me. Taking a drivers education class reminds people that they have to worry not only for their safety, but the safety of others. It teaches us that driving is a mental and physical skill, and our actions do in fact have consequences. Drivers need to understand the importance of emotion. When driving, we are using our mental skills, therefore emotions play a vital role on how we drive. You can’t be angry while you drive or project that feeling amongst others (or when the cops pull you over you’ll end up saying “the devil got control of my car”). It is important to stay calm and collected, practice with someone you respect, and remember that not everything in life is fast-paced, well apart from being on the highway. Although I have never been in a car accident myself (let’s not jinx it), both of my older brothers got into a car accident on a highway. Eric was sitting in the driver's seat going about 70 miles an hour, while my brother Kevin was in the front passengers seat. Suddenly, the car skid and Eric, with his prior knowledge, knew to turn the wheels in the direction of the skid and release the accelerator, thankfully hitting a pole. Could he have been safer? Of course, there’s always room for improvement. One of the steps to improvement would be making sure I’m well enough to drive. Somedays, I’m utterly tired and can’t even get out of bed, I wouldn’t want to drive knowing I can get into an accident and ruin someone's day (or life). Secondly, making sure you’ve got enough practice is key. Highways are scary, but with enough practice it’ll be like playing Mario Kart! (don’t actually try that). Lastly, I believe new and experienced drivers should always trust themselves, don’t put more added pressure onto yourself & keep calm and remember, “when nothing goes right, go left.”
