Imagine
waiting and waiting all day long for your loved one to come home and
they never show, or logging onto snapchat to see your dearest friend
bruised and burned, all because people choose not to take the safety
of motorcycles into consideration, how would you feel? Motorcycle
safety should be a higher concern for anyone who puts themself on a
bike or behind a wheel, yet it goes unnoticed because not many people
ride motorcycles. In my town especially motorcycles are a rare
vehicle on the road, and usually when one is seen people try their
best to stay away from them. Ignoring motorcycles is not the way to
maintain safety of a motorcycle rider, driving at appropriate speeds
will. People must realize that: car, bus, or truck drivers play a
huge role in reducing accidents involving motorcyclists. Accidents
with motorcycles occur mostly due to lack of attention. Despite that
motorcycles are small, when around one, one should be more alert and
keen to the movements of both themselves and the motorcyclists.
Motorcyclists account for a very small percentage of drivers on the
road, so keeping them protected as well those who drive near or
around them should be so simple.
It
is a stereotype that riding a motorcycle can make you appear as tough
or cool, so a lot of motorcyclists like to preserve that image by
refusing to wear helmets, but is a cracked skull appealing? Most
motorcycle injuries, a little less than half, occur because helmets
were not worn, so it is highly recommended to wear full-protection
helmets. Used helmets should not be one’s first option when riding
a motorcycle because they do not offer the full-coverage a
motorcyclist needs which could result in a higher fatality.
Motorcyclists must put their own safety into consideration, so they
can receive the same consideration from other drivers, after all how
can you expect from others of you don’t have respect for yourself?
Which brings me to another point, motorcyclists also try to uphold
their “badboy” image by wearing dark mysterious clothing, mainly
leather. Motorcyclists nowaday try to maintain a rugged “Greaser”
look, yet I doubt John Travolta would prefer to look good over being
alive and safe. It is preferred that motorcyclists wear bright or
reflective clothing so they can be seen on the road. A majority of
injuries or accidents come from motorcycles being “too small to
see,” or because they ride close to a driver’s blind spot, so if
motorcyclists wore vibrant oranges, yellows, or pinks a great
reduction in fatalities can be seen (Motorcycle Safety is a Two-way
Street). Looking macho should not be worth more than a life or lives,
so motorcyclists need to be more aware of what they put on before
revving up. Other clothing tips, are covered ankles, so boots, and
glasses or goggles, so the eyes are protected at all times. Abiding
by the basics can lead to a huge decrease in injuries and accidents,
but it takes more than just a handful to cooperate, everyone needs to
see that these casualties can be easily avoided.
I’ve
been in quite a few dangerous accidents while driving with my
friends. Each accident was different in its own way, but the whiplash
the morning after all hurt the same. Some of the accidents my friends
weren’t at fault but in some they were due to being on the phone,
fiddling with stuff in the car like connect to the aux, or eating, or
talking. The accidents taught me the utter importance of drivers ed,
as well as the severity in paying attention. Follow the rules, or
vital advice given could be life-saving. My friends brushed off
certain rules learned in drivers ed which makes me relieved that
they’re refresher courses to take if needed. Yet, the main problem
is lack of attention when driving aka the main factor of motorcycle
accidents. Safety on the road heavily depends on who is actively
aware behind the wheel.
Both
drivers and motorcyclists must remain calm and composed when on the
road with each other, it’s what’s for the best. Motorcyclists
need to take their time, going easy over, or better yet, avoiding
potholes and bumps. Hiding, when it is already hard for others to see
you is a habit motorcyclists should be compelled to stop doing, as it
only increases the risk of them getting hurt. Motorcyclists should be
confident enough in their driving skills as well as brave enough to
drive in compacted areas, because no one will show sympathy. Reckless
driving overall ought to be brought to a minimum, and it starts with
caring for one’s self and surroundings. Motorcyclists should be
equipped with the gear and knowledge to drive successfully, and car
driver just should be obliged to being more courteous, because all
lives are at risk. The safety methods, resources, and tips are laid
out, it’s just a matter of who is willing to use them to prevent a
loss of life, will you?
