I was deeply invested in the beat of my favorite song playing on the car stereo as I traveled along the well-known stretch of road on what appeared to be an ordinary afternoon. While driving, music had always been my dependable companion, providing comfort and diversion from the everyday. My focus strayed from the road as the upbeat song played over the car speakers. My senses were captivated by the lyrics and melodies, and I lost awareness of the surroundings of my car. I was abruptly brought back to reality by the sound of tires screeching and another vehicle’s horn honking. I tried to swerve out of the way out of panic, but it was too late. My world fell into disarray as a result of the audible impact. Glass broke, and metal shattered, and as I realized the seriousness of the situation, my heart began to race, I was crying. I had no idea that day would alter the way I viewed driving for the rest of my life. This experience of being in a car accident posed as a wake-up call when I drive. This experience was a traumatic but also life-changing event and led me to take driving more seriously. My experience reminded me of the importance of safe driving and responsible driving. I no longer listen to my music too loud while I’m driving and leave the house early for everything so I’m not rushing.

Becoming a better and safer driver, while also helping others become safer on the road, is something that’s important to me. When driving I avoid distractions, I keep my phone down and if I’m eating, I make sure I have enough time to park and eat. I help other people become safer drivers by not allowing people to leave from around me under the influence. I have spent my last few years being the designated driver or taking my friends home when they are under the influence, whether they feel like they are good to driving or not. I can become a safer driver by following the two-second rule is something I need to work on because sometimes I find myself riding too close to the car in front of me. By taking these steps I am becoming a safer driver and also contributing to a safer environment for the people around me.
