Idaho Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) System
Idaho uses a Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) system to help teens gain driving experience before receiving full driving privileges. Here’s how it works:
1. Supervised Instruction Permit (SIP) – Age 14½+
- Teens can apply for a Supervised Instruction Permit at age 14½.
- Requirements:
- Pass a written knowledge and vision test at the DMV.
- Drive only when supervised by a licensed driver age 21 or older seated beside them.
2. Underage Driver’s License – Age 15+
- After completing a state-approved driver’s ed course and logging 50 hours of supervised driving (including 10 hours at night), teens may apply for an underage driver’s license at age 15.
- Restrictions:
- No passengers outside of immediate family for the first 6 months unless accompanied by a licensed driver over 21.
- No driving between 11 PM and 5 AM unless accompanied by a licensed adult or for school/work purposes.
3. Full Unrestricted License – Age 16+
Teens can apply for a full driver’s license once they reach age 16 and meet all GDL requirements without any traffic violations.
