Maryland Graduated Licensing System (GLS) – Key Steps in Driver’s Ed
Maryland’s Graduated Licensing System (GLS) ensures new drivers gain safe driving experience before earning full driving privileges. Here’s how it works:
1. Maryland Learner’s Permit (Age 15 years, 9 months+)
- Teens can apply for a Maryland learner’s permit at age 15 years, 9 months by passing a vision and written test on Maryland traffic laws and road signs.
- While driving with a learner’s permit, you must always have a licensed adult (21+) in the front passenger seat.
- You are required to complete 60 hours of supervised driving, including 10 hours at night.
2. Maryland Provisional License (Age 16½+)
- After holding a learner’s permit for at least nine months without any violations and completing the required driver’s ed course, you can apply for a provisional license.
- Provisional license holders may drive unsupervised but face restrictions: no driving between 12 AM and 5 AM unless accompanied by an adult or for work/school purposes, and no passengers under 18 (except immediate family) during the first five months.
3. Full Maryland Driver’s License (Age 18+)
- At age 18, or after holding a provisional license for 18 months without violations, you can apply for a full, unrestricted Maryland driver’s license.
