The Importance of Driver’s Education
Driver’s Education should be mandatory for any individual desiring to sit behind the wheel of a car. Whenever we enter a vehicle we put our lives in the hands of the person behind the wheel. One little mistake can take someone’s life. In 2022, 1,982 accidents were reported in the state of Georgia. Which meant five deaths occurred each day because of a car accident. The number of deaths caused by driving can be reduced by requiring every driver in the U.S. to enroll in a driver’s education course regardless of age. You can also decrease the number of accidents by creating a ban on speeding in which violaters will lose their license for several years.
Many people learn to drive from a family member. When a family member teaches a teenager to drive they just teach the teen how to get from point A to point B. That family member typically doesn’t rely on the driving manual to teach the teen what the laws of the road are before putting them behind the wheel. The manual will teach them why you must yield before turning left, or why you aren’t supposed to change lanes in the middle of an intersection. The average teenager understands the basic mechanics of driving but is unaware of the laws associated with driving.
Without knowing important laws such as the right of way you’re bound to be in an accident. Generally speaking, most t-bone collisions could have been avoided if one of the drivers obeyed known traffic laws. Drunk drivers, illegal turns, and speeding are all causes of deadly car accidents. A driver breaking the law is what causes ninety-five percent of accidents on the road. As a child, I’ve seen many cars run a red light simply because they aren’t paying attention to the road. For that reason alone I propose waiting at least three seconds after the traffic light turns green before pulling off and driving onward. I have never been in a car accident, yet I have avoided many.
When I was in high school, I decided to take a trip to Sam’s Club with two of my classmates. She had just gotten her license. She drove to school every day on her own, so I trusted her. On the way back to my house she decided she was going to stop by her house first. My classmate was speeding and to exit the highway she took the chance and got over into the next lane without checking for cars next to her. She switched lanes to exit the highway and suddenly I heard the obnoxious sound of someone laying on their car horn. To avoid colliding with the vehicle she kept straight.
Driver’s education will teach you about checking your blind spot and the appropriate speed for exiting the highway. Here in Georgia driver’s education is only required for teenagers. However, you have drivers who wait until they are old enough to skip the required driving hours for teenagers. If a majority of the young drivers get their licenses this way It means we have tons of new people on the road without knowledge. New drivers are speeding at high rates, driving through stop signs, and weaving in and out of traffic lanes to show off their brand-new cars.
I can remember getting my driver’s license for the first time. My family members suddenly wanted me to take their car keys and run errands for them. Immediately, I turned them down because I didn’t feel safe behind the wheel of a car. I took six hours of driving lessons before getting my license, but I need more lessons. I found that driving instructions provide an explanation for everything they tell you to do while driving. A driving instructor can also intervene if I make a decision that could have a fatal outcome. If you learn how to drive by relying on your family you put yourself and your relatives in danger.
Driving instructors have pedals that allow them to control what happens on the road. As well as protect your life and theirs. The second biggest reason for a car accident is speeding. A small fender bender isn’t terrifying. It’s the fact that someone could be driving so fast that they could jam your car door shut, and leave you trapped in a car you may need to escape from. It’s the impact from the speed that causes bodily injury. I’ve heard of people losing their ability to walk or move at all because of a car accident where they were rammed by someone driving too fast. If speeding was banned there wouldn’t be any more fatal accidents.
