Driver’s Education

Across the globe it is well ascertained that there are different types of drivers or people that drive personally or others who choose to take driving as a professional, others wise referred to professional drivers of buses, trucks, cars and personal chauffeur. No matter the category of drivers, the fact to be reckoned with is that they all needed driving or drivers’ education.

What is drivers’ education! In my own understanding and from what l have heard from family and friends, it is about safe and cautious way of handling a vehicle, learning and adhering to road safety rules, understanding traffic signs and traffic rules. It also entails understanding what road safety is, as well as considering other road users of diver’s form including pedestrians. It also includes understanding your vehicle type and imbibing good maintenance of it to save your life and those of other road users.

Having define what drivers’ education is in my own way, the importance of driver’s ed in helping to reduce the number of deaths as a result of driving recklessly or nonchalantly is very key. Over the years and in my country a whole number of deaths occur daily, weekly and monthly through road accidents. These deaths could be averted or reduced to a minimum if most drivers understand the importance of driver’s education, if they abide by it, if they consider other road users, if they are empathetic, if they adhere to the traffic rules and obey it.

However, it is saddening that majority of the deaths as a result of road accident occur because most drivers are ignorant of the importance of the driver’s education. This is obvious according to the road safety commission in my country. Most drivers according to the road safety corps do not understand the traffic rules, some drivers never attended or pass the driving test, some never learned how to drive especially in developing nations, they learn from a friend, from a car mechanic, some husband teach their wife’s how to drive, without getting proper driver’s education or getting certified from the driving school. No wonder, we have a lot of road accidents and the number of deaths occurring daily as a result of someone’s error on the wheel. Therefore, the importance of driver’s education should be well emphasized and spelt out to intending drivers and drivers already on the road either certified or not.

To reduce the number of deaths related to driving some steps has to be taken by the authorities in charge of road networks and road safety as well as the drivers. These steps are as follows;

-Drivers who are not certified to drive must not be allowed to be on the road driving, it should be an offence punishable by law.

-Reckless driving should be reported by road users to appropriate authorities.

-Drivers should act and drive responsibly, its one of the civic responsibilities to consider other road users.

-Drivers that fails safety driving test should not be certified to drive

-Drivers that drink and drive once apprehended should be cautioned or their driver’s certificate should be withdrawn and they must go back to driving school for a new test.

-Driver’s education should be well understood and obeyed to save the life of the drivers and others.

Some years ago, while we went on our high school excursion to Badagry a suburb of Lagos, our bus driver was applauded by everyone of us, because he refuses to risk our life with a reckless car driver who overtook our bus in such a terrible speed that it took every form of professionalism in our school bus driver to avert an accident. The other driver went as far as insulting and shouting on our driver side by side but our driver never responded but concentrated on the road while the supervising teacher called the road safety police on phone and the reckless driver was apprehended in the next bus stop. It could have been a deadly crash with twenty-four students, but thank goodness God that the accident was averted because our driver understood the importance of driver’s education and abided by it.

The step to take to be a better and safer driver on the road include but not limited to the following;

-Learn to obey traffic rules and laws

-Fully digest, understand and work with driver’s education

-Be safety conscious at all times

-Put other road users in mind and in my own shoes (Treat others the way you want to be treated)

-Avoid drinking and driving

-Avoid making phone calls while driving

In conclusion, every driver must learn to be peaceful on the road, do not jeopardize other people’s life because of emotional issues. Check and maintain your vehicles before going on the road.

We must learn that every road user and my life matter. Therefore, driving safely and avoiding accidents could go a long way to reduce deaths on our roads. More especially every driver must bear in mind that Drivers education is very important to work with so as to reduce the number of deaths on our roads as a result of careless driving.
