Driver Education Initiative
Driver education plays a key role in ensuring the number of deaths and injuries decrease from motor vehicle accidents. By supplying drivers with the necessary knowledge, skills, and safe driving practices it can help reduce the risks of driving. This structure of training not only prepares young drivers for how to navigate the roads, but it also plays a crucial role in preventing accidents. Here are some key reasons why driver education is crucial in assisting in having safer roads and lower rates of traffic related fatalities.
Having improved knowledge of traffic laws and safe driving practice are important in driver education in reducing deaths and injuries in motor vehicle accidents. Driver education programs teach unaccustomed drivers how to drive. It teaches them about speed limits, lane changes, proper signaling and traffic signs. Having the proper training in traffic laws leads to safe driving practices. It prevents simple errors like running red lights, and speeding, which results in car accidents. The development of defensive driving is another excellent quality to have when learning about driving. Defensive driving is another reason driving education is needed for drivers to be safe when driving on the road. This is one of the major skills that drivers need to be educated in defensive driving. Following traffic laws, avoiding distractions, and always wearing your seatbelt and using child restraints are all steps that you must follow to reduce the number of deaths on the road related to driving. They tell you to follow and obey the speed limits, telling you how fast or slow you need to be going in certain areas. You should also avoid distractions like your phone and the car radio. These are major distractions that you should avoid so that you do not hurt yourself or others. Another rule you should follow is using seatbelts and child restraints. When using child restraints, you must make sure that your child can fit in their seat. Do this by checking that their height, weight, and age are appropriate, and you must make sure that the seat fits correctly in the car.
I have experienced a car accident. In March of 2022, I was in 9th grade, and I was sitting in the passenger seat while my mother was driving. We were getting off an exit and were both turned looking at the on-coming traffic headed our way, while we were turned someone slammed into the back of us. I slammed back into the chair and my mother hit her head on the window and the steering wheel. We both sat there for about five seconds in shock then we went off to the side of to the shoulder so that we could call someone. We called the police and my stepdad to tell them what happened. When the police came, we told them about the crash and then we got checked out by EMS. After that, we went home and decided to go to the hospital the next day. After school we went to the hospital and got checked out by the doctors. When we got our results back, we were disappointed and confused because we knew that this would limit our abilities to do things that we usually do. For months, my mother and I had to go to physical therapy to get better and we had to stop doing things that we normally did so we did not hurt ourselves even more. I had to quit drumline because the drums were heavy, and my back was not strong enough for that. My mother could not move as freely as she wanted to. After our monthly rounds of physical therapy and doctors’ visits, we were able to live our normal lives again.
Now from this life experience I had with my mother; you would think there is nothing much I could have done in this situation, and you are correct. We were following all the correct laws, but someone else’s actions caused our injuries. It was unavoidable in the situation, but I am hoping that by sharing our story this will remind others of the level of responsibility of their actions. Steps that I can take to be a better driver would be to improve my awareness and attention, mastering parking, maneuvering, and staying calm in traffic. I can also focus on defensive driving techniques such as avoiding aggressive driving. Adapting to climate changes and maintaining my car are also steps that I can use to establish both my safety and of those around me
Driving is the most underrated high-level responsibility that most Americans take for granted. Our systems in place can and do work to prevent potential accidents and fatalities, especially when everyone pays attention. I believe driving education plays a significant role in ensuring people are safe on the roads. Following these rules will help better our communities and strengthen our relationship with others as we continue to use motor vehicles. By emphasizing proper vehicle handling, and patience, driving education further produces habits that contribute to safer roadways.
