Driving
is a huge responsibility and this idea is something many people don’t
understand. My grandpa told my mom this and my mom told me the same
thing when I started driving: “You are driving a three thousand
pound killing machine. Be careful.” So my first day at driver’s
ed I had a notebook and a pen, my eyes wide open and ready to learn
everything I possibly could in those few days to ensure I wouldn’t
be a safety hazard on the road. My parents have both gotten into
fairly rough accidents when they were younger and so I suppose that
is why they have conveyed to me the huge responsibility of driving.
Unfortunately,
many teens don’t take their responsibility seriously and driving
doesn’t come across as a privilege. Some of my own friends drive
quite recklessly, speeding down the freeway just for fun. If seasoned
drivers served as examples to new drivers on how to properly handle
their responsibility of driving, we could reduce the number of
driving-related deaths.
Driving
is fun and should be enjoyable, I am not stating that driving should
be a grim experience but all drivers should take the necessary
precautions to ensure everyone’s safety. More often times than not,
it is unfortunately younger people who fail to drive safely. But a
difference can be made by several steps of action. This means young
adults encouraging other young adults to always buckle up before
driving. This means driving when well-rested and attentive. This
means avoiding driving when emotionally stirred or flustered. This
means having a designated driver when going out or not driving at
all.
For
the sake of our loved ones and the people around us, we all should
take these practical steps to ensure our safety and the safety of
others while driving.
