As people with lots of work and hectic schedules, the last thing you
want to do is add yet another class to your already busy schedule.
You want to learn how to drive but you’re not excited to have to
take a class. You’re not alone, we’ve all been there, but
drivers ed is a class you don’t want to miss out on. Driver’s
education is very important because by taking the class you are
gaining the essential knowledge you need to be safe on the road.
Moreover, you are reducing the chance of an accident and elevating
your chance of getting home safely.
There are about
six million car crashes in the US per year and about 40,000 deaths
associated with that. That number needs to be reduced. But how? Well,
the first step is to follow the laws already in place. We as
Americans need to do better. We as humans need to do better. This
starts with no texting, drinking, or anything else distracting while
driving. Probably nine times out of ten you won’t crash from doing
these actions but it’s the one time that could change your life or
someone else’s. That one text message could be the difference
between life or death. So why risk it? Think long and hard because in
my mind I can’t justify putting my life or someone else’s life on
the line to text anyone even someone as important as my boss. If
everyone made an effort to stop distracted driving, the death rates
and number of accidents would decrease and make the roads a little
safer.
Have you ever
lost someone to a car accident? If you haven’t you will never truly
know what it feels like to wonder, why the person that hit your loved
one or why your loved one thought whatever they were doing was more
important than living. As someone who has lost three people in three
different car crashes, I beg those who practice unsafe driving to
correct there their ignorant ways. I lost two friends and my aunt to
car crashes. My aunt died because she fell asleep at the wheel. In
drivers ed they teach you to not go behind the wheel if you are
exhausted, highly emotional, or intoxicated. If you are not in a fit
state of mind to drive, call a friend, or call a taxi, but don’t
play Russian roulette and drive unsafely.
I’m not going to lie. I listened to my driver’s instructor and
followed all the rules for about a month, and then I got lazy. But
having reflected on my actions and recognizing the utter tragedy a
car accident can be I have set a goal for myself to stop being
selfish and try creating safer roads in my community. You don’t
think one person could have an impact, but if you do it, then your
friends and family could be influenced to do it, and soon enough it’s
making a huge impact.
