Driving
accidents are the cause of more than 34,000 deaths in America each
year contributing to the 3rd leading cause of death in the U.S.,
unintentional injuries. The real tragedy of these deaths is that they
are completely avoidable. The vast majority of accidents are caused
by negligent drivers. Drivers ed is the best way to prevent
negligent drivers, informing drivers of the dangers distraction can
cause and teaching them the rules of the road can drastically reduce
the number of accidents and subsequently deaths. One of the most
reliable ways to prevent accidents and driving related deaths is to
reduce the number of distractions a driver experiences, The most
threatening thing to a driver’s safety is a distraction, taking your
attention off of the road for even a split second can cost not only
your life but the life of drivers around you. Eliminating these
distractions is a key step to reducing the amount of driving related
deaths. Driver’s Safety classes need to stress the importance of
this to new drivers, making sure they understand that text messages,
back seat conversations, and roadside sights are the least of their
concern while on the road. Drivers must understand that while behind
the wheel of a car their one and only concern should be the
conditions of the road around them, traffic signals, road signs, and
most importantly other drivers must always be observed by the driver.
I have had an experience with a distracted driver that almost cost
his life and the lives of others. A man was speeding into a 4 way
intersection clearly not noticing the red light he had just ran or
the oncoming traffic. He slammed into a car with then spun out of
control hitting a pole while he simultaneously spun and hit my Mother
and I in our car. We were a lucky few to have no one die from the
crash but many are not so lucky and hundreds die in accidents like
the one I described every day. That is why I find it extremely
important that everyone including myself analyzes their driving and
recognizes their bad habits and then make a change to fix those
mistakes, for me it’s the radio that can prove a distraction as I
fiddle with the volume or station. Recognizing these mistakes and
making an effort to fix them can help make the roads safer for
everyone.
