The proper education of new drivers is taken quite lightly, 2 tests
and boom you are legal to drive anything up to a super car and there
is no set limit on how many lessons the driver must have before being
allowed to sit an exam (usually not in their own car ), 1 theory test
and 1, 30 minute practical test should not be the basis we allow a
person to be in charge of a 1 tonne vehicle and have the
responsibility of other lives either in the vehicle or on the road.
The knowledge needed to pass the written exam is not much more than
common knowledge known by most of the general public. One uneducated
driver who forgot to signal before changing lanes has the potential
for a 10 car pileup or even more on a wet road, this can have
consequences of minor traffic to the potential death of the driver or
others on the road. By splitting practical tests for 3 separate dates
would provide different weather, interactions and obstacles that the
driver would have to face rather than some drivers having dry
conditions and a clear road where as others face a wet road during
rush hour. Anyone applying for a new or renewed license should have a
minimum hour count for lessons and have to sit a set hour amount of
theory classes, as a driving license lasts much longer than the type
of society that was present in the year of the test.
I have personally
witnessed family members and employers be in crashes due to
irresponsible driving, going down the hard shoulder or speeding and
switching lanes without the proper signals, these are things they
themselves have done and would have caused the crash. Texting,
drinking, speeding, and improper use of the roads, none of these
things are worth anyone’s life, let the person on the other end of
the text believe you are ignoring them, it is much better to have
someone mad that you either didn’t reply, or are late, or anything
else than for them to receive a phone call saying you are dead or in
prison for manslaughter due to a text. War has less casualties than
one year of deaths on the road, when we there is something that has a
higher death toll than Iraq and Afghanistan combined something needs
to be done.
If you believe
you wouldn’t be able to repass your driving license today, get some
lessons. If you believe you don’t know what most/all the rules of
the road are, they are online or in a book. It is much safer to
update your knowledge and ask for a bit more help than be prideful
and end up in an accident. And be aware not all places have the same
laws about the roads, if you are travelling to a different country or
state, just have a quick check even if it is just to save yourself
the hassle of a ticket.
