Driving
is one of the best privileges a parent can give to a teenager,
because that parent is basically putting all their trust into their
child to be a safe and well-coordinated driver. Teenagers use this to
their advantage as they can travel to anyplace, they like that they
were unable to travel to before without their parents’ consent.
Although this may be “just” an exciting opportunity to hang out
with your friends, there are various risks that you should be aware
of. This includes bad weather, risky drivers, excessive speeding,
night driving, DUIs, and most importantly technological distractions
like texting.
I
personally feel that drivers ed class is important, because it can be
beneficial to an inexperienced driver’s knowledge of the road. A
teenager’s first driving experience can be both amusing and scary.
What I mean by this statement is that it is very exciting to know the
feeling of being behind the wheel for the first time while
simultaneously, scary because of the fear of crashing to another
vehicle. The driver during this stage is a beginner who doesn’t
really know how to use turn signals properly, switch lanes, and has
low skill as a defensive driver. Drivers ed helps you get the
feel for driving with another driver who is much more experienced.
Drivers ed helps you get the feel for driving with another
driver who is much more experienced. Not only can the class warn
beginner drivers about disobeying the rules of the road, it can also
use stories of any vehicle crashes to evoke fear into the students
which will prevent them from excessive speeding, texting while
driving, and driving under influence (DUI).
One
step that can be taken to reduce the number of deaths caused by
vehicle accidents is to pay close attention to regulation signs,
especially speed limits. Exceeding a posted speed limit means you
have elected to drive faster than was intended for that road, putting
others at risk. You must remember that driving is big privilege,
because when you are behind the wheel you are responsible for
preserving the safety for pedestrians, bicyclists, other fellow
drivers, and most importantly yourself. Another step that can be
taken is to find a way to prevent young drivers from distracted
driving. Texting is one of the main sources of interest of an average
teenager as it is part of their daily life when social networking
with friends, web surfing, or watching videos on social media
(Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, etc.). Ironically it is also
one of the leading causes of vehicle accidents during their teenage
period. They need to hear several stories from their teachers in
Drivers ed about how it negatively affected themselves and other
drivers.
Thankfully,
I currently have never been involved in a car accident as a driver
nor passenger. But, I can use these steps to improve myself as I have
room for improvement in a few areas when it comes to my driving
skills.
