Taking responsibility for driving

Learning to
drive is one of those things that marks the start of growing up. It
gives young people a sense of responsibility, for themselves, a
vehicle, and other passengers. However the road today is not the
safest place. That is because of the way “driving today” is
thought of.

Traffic occurs beyond the span of rush hour. Naturally with so many
cars on the road it is important that people are paying attention to
what is going on around them. It would be a lot easier to simply
blame technology, however technology does not force a person to have
one hand on the wheel and one hand updating their status. The person
has the control, they choose to occupy their focus with something
other than driving

Technology
should be limited in that people should have settings to reduce the
use of phones while driving. Something that would act as a “driving
lock” to make sure that their focus will not be wavered. However
that does not solve the problem entirely. Distractions still exist.
Instead of going through and eliminating every possible distraction
why not just change the mindset of the drivers.

More awareness
needs to be spread about the importance of staying focused while
driving. It starts with the new drivers, the mindset should be
integrated into their heads by the time they have their license. That
ideal should be prominent throughout the process of learning to
drive, they should truly understand the responsibility they will
hold. Whether it’s a parent teaching their child, online classes
about driving, or safety courses at school, the idea that driving is
a responsibility that requires focus will ensure a good mindset.
There will always be people who go against the rules and fail to take
things seriously, at some point those people will have to face the
consequences. However as one person, what I or anyone else could do
to help be a safer driver is to always be aware, not fall to the
temptation of technology, and to be a defensive driver. It is good to
thoroughly understand the rules of the road before you venture out on
your own.

While I have
never been in an accident I have seen the damage it can cause. It is
important that the road be a safe place, which happens with each
individual not only understanding the responsibility of driving but
accepting it. It starts with one person and grows from there.
