Driver’s
Education: It can Mean the Difference Between Life and Death

Drivers
education can mean the difference of whether or not you or the other
people involved in the crash will live to see many important
milestones in life: being born, taking the first step, going to the
first day of kindergarten, graduating high school, going to college,
having the first child, first grandchild and so many more. By taking
drivers ed, people will learn that there are many
consequences, including death that could result from distracted
driving.
In
America, an average of about 4 people die each hour as a result of
driving. By taking drivers ed, you can be the difference and
save a life. Of course you won’t be able to avoid every single car
accident, but you might be able to change the situation from death to
life.

The
first and most important step to take in reducing the number of
deaths related to driving is being aware of your surroundings.
According
to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,
road
traffic crashes are the world’s leading cause of death for children
and young adults 5–29 years of age. Many deaths can be avoided, by
using good defensive driving techniques. Another important step is to
drive only when you are in sound mental and physical condition.

I
fortunately have not been in any life threatening car accidents.
However, I have been in the car during some fender benders. One time,
my mother was driving around in a parking lot at a college in our
neighborhood looking for a parking spot, and a college student backed
up into us. The minivan had a nice dent in the door and fortunately
no one was sitting in the passenger seat, because they would have had
a broken leg. I am quite thankful that my neither sister or I were
sitting there. There was another time when my mother stopped at a
light and the lady in the car behind up wasn’t paying attention and
rear ended us. Again, there was a nice dent in the back of my mom’s
minivan. My father has been in quite a few car accidents that
resulted in him being without a car and whiplash. I have seen some of
my family members drive without hands before, a very dangerous way to
drive.

There
are many steps that can be taken to make driving safer. I can make
other people more aware of the consequences that result from reckless
driving. I can also help the driver when I am a passenger in the car,
by not being a distraction, such as taking about unimportant things.
I have not started driving, however, when I do start driving I pledge
to not text and drive, which can be considered distracted driving,
the leading cause of death while driving. Remember don’t text and
drive, it can take someone’s life.
