When
it comes to the safety and wellbeing of individuals on the road it
seems that no matter how many classes students attend the rate of
deaths from driving never decreases. Though it is still very
important to attend a drivers ed program before students hit
the road there are some things to take into account. Most times new
drivers are around 16-17 years old. This is a good time to start
driving and learning about the road. But kids around 16-17 years old
are still in their mind invincible to the world. Therefore they
struggle to really grasp that those car accidents they see in the
videos could really be them one day.

I
think something that could be implemented into each driver’s life is
another class around the ages of 22-25. This is usually when
individuals lives are beginning to settle down and they begin to see
and acknowledge the reality of life. By having another class for
older individuals it will allow them to see from a different
perspective, they will look at it in a new light. They will be able
to understand the real risks of driving and it can be a scary
reminder of the dangers of driving that they may have forgotten. It
isn’t just young adults though, too many individuals of all ages are
distracted by their smartphones while driving. Recently there has
been new advances in technology that allows you to put your phone on
driving mode to reduce these distractions. Most overlook this
application and are often checking their phones for texts or changing
music. By placing the application on everyones phone before selling
them to the public it could increase the likelihood of customers
actually using it decreasing the chance they use their phone while
driving.

I
personally have been in a car accident in which the person was
driving irresponsibly. I had gotten rear ended by a guy who was on
his phone while driving. We were getting off a highway and merging
onto another road. Since he was on his phone he hadn’t noticed that I
did not go since I was yielding to the cars driving by. Since he
wasn’t paying attention he pressed on the gas running right into the
back of my car. Luckily the damage was minor but was still a very
scary situation. He later did admit that it was because of his phone
that he hadn’t realized I didn’t go. At the time I was 17 and still a
recent driver. I like most teenagers didn’t believe that I would ever
be the one apart of an accident. I was a safe driver so it couldn’t
happen to me. It wasn’t until I was hit by another driver who was
roughly 30 that I realized it doesn’t matter if Im a safe driver if
the ones around me aren’t.

There
are many things I can do to become a safer driving. One thing I can
make use of is the application that doesn’t allow you to use your
phone while driving. Though I don’t use my phone while driving by
having the application it can secure that I won’t be tempted to use
it. This will keep all my notifications on silent while driving and
won’t allow me to use my phone if my car is in motion. Also, I will
keep my passengers to a minimum to reduce the chance of being
distracted by the conversations and movements around me. Often
distracted driving comes from the passengers in your car talking to
you. Sometimes one may ask you to turn around or grab something. This
takes your eyes off the road just long enough for you to swerve into
another lane or rear end someone who may have stopped.
