Your
Life Depends On It

My
name is Mariyah Cooper and I am a senior attending Samuel Clemens
High School in San Antonio Texas. Fall of 2020 I plan to be studying
at Northeast Lakeview College to pursue my dream in becoming a
psychologist.
I have always been passionate when it comes to helping others.
Scholarships will help me greatly on my path to getting into college.

Driver
education is important because in order to drive, one has to know the
basics of a vehicle. The words “I can drive” are used in ways to
show off and most people do not know what it really means to drive
safely. Thousands of lives have been lost yearly due to careless,
reckless, and distracted drivers. When driving a vehicle, the number
one priority is defensive driving.

Countless
steps can be taken to reduce the number of deaths when driving. Rules
such as sticking to the speed limit, not driving intoxicated,
avoiding the use of a phone, utilizing turn signals, wearing a seat
belt, driving a car one is comfortable with, not eating, drinking or
applying makeup are important ways to minimize death rates and
accidents in general.

I
have been fortunate enough to not have gone through an accident
involving my family members and myself. However, there are multiple
times I have seen my family drive irresponsibly; whether it be be
from stopping at a red light and picking up their phone, to being too
busy munching on food they do not notice the light has turned green.

There
are several steps I can take in order to be a better and safer
driver. Things which include keeping the radio down, scanning my
surroundings, maintaining an appropriate distance (3 second rule),
driving with both hands on the wheel, and not driving tired. In
addition, because I am a minor, all aspects of driving are
heightened. According to the Edgar Snyder Associates website drivers
aging from 16-19 years old have the highest rate of car accidents. In
addition to being a method of transportation, it is important to know
a vehicle can be used as weapon. Hence, driving should be taught
properly and understood by individuals before they are authorized to
drive.
