Better
Safe Than Sorry

I
always looked forward to getting my license and being able to drive
because, as a child, I viewed driving as some sort of fun game. When
I entered high school, my thoughts about driving began to shift from
being a fun game into being my gateway to freedom. Rather than
something I had to take seriously, I started to connect the concept
of driving with the idea of being independent and having the power to
go where I want. For most teenagers in highschool, their license
equates to their independence. Most teens do not view driving as
being something serious or dangerous, which is very problematic. They
don’t understand the hard reality of driving, nor the severe
consequences that come along with it.

More
teens need to be made aware of how their irresponsible actions not
only can affect their lives, but also the lives of people around
them. Nowadays, technology plays a large role in our society,
especially in the lives of teens. The amount of time that teens spend
on their devices is unhealthy. Many teennagers are addicted to their
iPhones, and they find it very difficult to stay away from them for
even a small period of time. Drivers should never be on their devices
while they are driving, but new drivers need to be especially
careful. New drivers should not have access to their phones when they
are driving because their focus should be solely on the road. They
should not be distracted by anyone or anything else while they are
driving. They should always obey the speed limit and not feel
pressured to go faster by anyone else.

While
I have not had the experience of being in a car accident, my brothers
unfortunately have. Luckily, the accidents that they were in did not
harm them or any other people involved. In another instance, my uncle
was in a bad car accident as a result of his reckless driving, and he
got half of his arm ripped off his body. My uncle continues to tell
his story from when he was younger, because he wants to educate
everyone on the importance of safe driving. I have heard of many
accidents involving teen drivers that resulted in the deaths of not
only the driver, but also all of his/her friends that were in the
car.

We
can help stop this cycle of reckless drivers by implementing new ways
to educate all drivers about the serious consequences of their
actions. Parents need to stop their bad driving habits before their
children begin to imitate them. The new generation needs to be aware
of the importance of drivers ed because it will help decrease
the amount of car accidents that are a result of careless drivers and
save many lives. My parents have always said to me “it is better to
be safe than sorry”, and this is the type of mindset that all
drivers need to have.
