Safe driving is a
very important thing in today’s society. Especially in today’s
teens, you will most likely see a cell phone in their hand, whether
they’re driving on a gravel road, the highway, or an interstate.
Cell phone usage while driving has been seen more and more as time
goes on. Every day I’m seeing news articles on Facebook and
television talking about how another person has died by texting and
driving.
Drivers ed is
very important because if we don’t have safe drivers, who’s safe
driving then? Men, women, and children are in great danger due to
people not getting a good driving education. People never believe
it’ll happen to them before it’s too late. It’s always the
little things that can save your life that people don’t know about,
such as seatbelts and distracted driving.
Over the span of my
teenage years, safe driving has always been a conversation I’ve had
at school and at home. One thing my school has done to attempt to
reduce the number of deaths related to driving is having a mock car
accident. With the help of the Nebraska State Patrol, Merrick County
Sheriff’s Department, Polk County Sheriff’s Department, Polk
Volunteer Fire Department, and Clarks Volunteer Fire Department, our
school shows the high school student body what happens at the scene
of a car accident and how it could potentially kill someone, or badly
injure some to the point of paralysis.
This past
September, I had the opportunity to be a part of the mock car
accident. I was chosen to be the hysterical victim since I had been
in one-act for the last two years. It was honestly one of the most
life-changing things I have done. I learned how some of the things I
had been doing while driving was completely dangerous and could have
potentially hurt myself or someone else. After that experience, I
had changed my ways and now I drive safer than I ever had before.
Fortunately, I
personally have never been in an actual accident, other than once
going into the ditch during a really bad snow storm trying to go home
from school. My dad, however, has seen many brutal car accidents,
being that he is a firefighter and an EMT in Grand Island. He is
always telling me that I need to drive safe because he doesn’t want
to see me be in that position.
Some steps I can
take to become a better driver is to always be aware of my
surroundings while driving and watching how others are driving.
Another thing I can do to drive safer is to not be so distracted by
things in my cars, such as the radio or phone notifications. I will
always be a spokesperson on safe driving after all of the things I’ve
heard and what I learned after the mock car accident.
Hopefully, in the
future, we could possibly have extra little classes on driver’s
safety. One day at a time we need to be reducing the death rates of
driving until it is rare to see car crash on the news or social
media. If you can drive safe, it is one less factor of killing or
hurting you or someone you love.
