Driving
on the road can be a difficult task to manage. Especially with
passengers in the car. The importance of taking part in drivers
education not only benefits the person doing the learning but it can
also save lives. Even just thinking about it makes me feel like a
superhero. Preventing these kinds of accidents can result in just
maybe even being a little kinder when driving. I have been told by my
drivers ed teacher that the most dangerous thing you could ever do in
your life is driving a car. But why? I mean having car accidents yeah
I can see why. But then you have someone look at the statistics of
today’s fatalities compared to world wars or revolutions, and it’s
just as bad. The driving task has become the new war.
A friend of mine
had gotten into a really bad car collision. The other car slid on the
road causing them to slide onto traffic going in the opposite
direction they were going. Hit them full force going 55 mph. To this
day she cant wear and backpacks or bags. I had helped her around
school getting her lunch for her, she had to wear this upper body
brace that held her head and her chest in place. You see the other
driver was not thinking that since it was snowing that the night
before may have frozen the road, and other vehicles had no idea they
were getting into a car collision that day. The other driver could
have prevented that situation by going a little slower around that
turn.
A constant question
my drivers’ ed teacher asks me as well is, what can you do to prevent
the number of deaths by car collisions? A lot of kids in my class
answer, well maybe don’t drive stupid. Well yes very valid answer but
the best way to prevent collisions Is to follow the law and be a
courteous driver. And by courteous I mean letting others get in front
of you in a tight spot, or maybe pulling over to see if someone needs
help. Just little things can make an impact and maybe even save
someone’s life. Especially actually paying attention to the road. We
are obviously in the 21st century and everyone has a cell phone. When
I drive I constantly see people on their phone texting or are even
having a conversation. In textbooks, I have seen that driving and
talking on the phone is just as bad as drinking and driving. Because
people are more likely to pay attention to the conversation rather
than focus on the task at hand.
As a new driver,
the possibilities of what I can do to prevent deaths are infinite.
But what scares me the most is that just one person like me is not
enough to make that change. On a daily I can choose to let people
merge in front of me, I can choose to go the speed limit ( which is a
given), I can choose to pull over and let the tailgater speed past me
with a finger pointed at me. You name it. Choosing to be a courteous
driver is my choice. I’m choosing to follow every single law I know
that can help not only myself on the road but others as well. I don’t
want to be the cause of someone losing their loved ones because I had
a conversation on the phone that was more prominent than that
person’s life. I know that if I were to lose the ones that I loved I
would never be able to forgive myself. I am currently taking drivers
ed not only because they reduce my insurance, or that my parents
don’t have time to teach me how, but because I don’t want to have
that burden of taking someone’s life because I wasn’t paying
attention.
