Owning
a car is a good thing because it makes our lives easier in so many
ways. But, when used carelessly, it might harm not only you or
destroy your life, but also those around you. An uneducated and
unsafe driver behind the wheels can easily turn a good means of
transportation into a deadly weapon.
I
remember the day I first had my driver’s license. I was so excited
and willing to drive from one place to another, without any
supervision of my parents. My first ambition was to drive alone from
home to school and also hit the highway. That wasn’t my parent’s
cup of tea. One thing I heard from them was “be patient don’t
rash.” They wanted to make sure that I’m okay with all the
requirements it takes to be a safe and educated driver, starting by
putting on my seatbelt every time, avoid texting or extensive use of
telephone, or else driving under influence, and eating while driving.
Apart
from the required 50 hours of being assisted by an experienced driver
aged 21 and above, I was encouraged to remain under their supervision
for more hours to make sure I have a complete mastery of the steering
wheel, and I am able to take over safely on highways as well as
changing lanes accordingly.
Hence,
a safe driver is the one who is aware of his responsibilities. He
carefully controls everything around him; he is focused on the road,
alert and sober. Such a driver will gain trust from whoever is in the
vicinity. The truth that everyone should know is that driving
a motor vehicle is not a right, but instead, it is a privilege. By
the way, any privilege can be taken away if misused. A safe driver is
required to be responsible and willing to learn and
practice more. In my case, for instance, my dad didn’t let me drive
alone in the first year of driving experience. For me, I considered
it as good advice because it helped me gain more driving experience
and avoid distractions. Yes, it is a normal thing for every teenager
to be happy about driving. But what count more are precautions and
safety.
Nowadays,
statistics show that automobile related deaths involve young people
with less than two years of driving experience. In fact, our teens
are not equipped to recognize and react to dangerous situations. Good
driving techniques are developed through experience and young drivers
will inevitably make more mistakes during the learning stages, but
the more they are open to learning the more they become experienced.
In
conclusion, safe driving is important in that it determines the level
of responsibility of those behind the wheels. Moreover, it creates a
safe environment where everyone feels comfortable to drive and enjoy
the privilege. To drive is to endorse responsibilities,
especially, for those driving family members, friends or any public
transportation. Thus, the driver should be alert, sober, and focused.
In so doing, we can make our roads a safe place.
