education is important in regards to reducing the number of deaths as
a result of driving. Auto accidents are the leading cause of death
for teens ages 15 to 20. There was a study done that followed 150,000
teen drivers, and it found that drivers ed significantly
reduces crashes and traffic violations. When crashes are reduced that
would definitely reduce the number of deaths as a result of driving
as well. Fatality rates for teens are at the highest when teens are
16 to 18, so drivers ed really makes a difference when it
counts the most.
There
are many steps that can be taken to reduce the number of deaths
related to driving. I believe the main things to consider when it
comes to reducing the number of deaths are obeying traffic laws,
avoid distractions, and avoid drinking when indulging in alcohol and
drugs. These things are necessary to make the roads safer for
everyone. Driving the speed limit and following other traffic laws
gives drivers a guide to follow when it comes to driving. Texting and
driving distracts a driver from paying attention to what is happening
on the road and causes many accidents and fatalities as well. It is
paramount for a driver to pay attention to the road at all times and
not drive while distracted. I see no reason why anyone would want to
get behind the wheel of a car when it comes to drinking alcohol or
using drugs, but many drivers choose to do this and it is simply
foolish to do so.
I
have never been involved in a car accident but I have been riding
with friends and family that drove irresponsibly. I have a female
friend that at this point I refuse to ride with because she will not
put down her phone when driving, she texts and drives constantly
while driving. I have told her that my life is more important than
any text that she could be sending, so I now drive my own vehicle
instead of riding with her. I have also been riding with family
members that think speeding and racing other vehicles is a cool thing
to do. I tell them to slow down, and that driving at a high rate of
speed is very dangerous.
The
main thing I can do to be a better driver is to take my own advice
and obey all traffic laws, avoid distractions, and never drink
alcohol or indulge drugs before driving. I do not drink alcohol nor
do any drugs so that one is covered. I consider myself to be a safe
and defensive driver, making sure to look out for the mishaps of
others. I always leave ahead of time so I do not have to drive fast.
I can help others by encouraging them to drive safely and discuss the
dangers of hazardous driving. The roads can be much safer if we all
drive with a sense of responsibility.
