Do you ever wish
you had more control over your life? Well I am here to tell you that
you do when it comes to safe driving! We all have not only a right,
but an obligation to be a safe driver. A motor vehicle is a large
piece of equipment that requires an educated, responsible person to
operate. Let’s face it, you would never let someone fly a plane
who did not have the proper training and frame of mind to do so.
We all
anticipate the day we turn 16 and can apply for a driving permit.
What we don’t always take the time to think about is the
responsibility we are given. Yes, the training required both written
and in practice behind the wheel take time, but they are absolutely
necessary. Imagine if you just slid behind the wheel of a car
without ever being properly taught how to use the vehicle or what to
do once you hit the gas. That is a scary thought, but if you don’t
take your training seriously, that is essentially what you are doing;
putting yourself, passengers and anyone else on the road in danger.
Therefore, Drivers ed Courses and many hours behind the wheel
are critical to making you a safe driver.
Proper training
and personal accountability are key to reducing deaths related to
driving. If you know the rules of the road and follow those
properly, you are already helping to make the roads safer for
everyone, including pedestrians. The other factor is morally doing
what is right. This includes, paying attention, keeping your phone
off and out of sight, and minimizing distractions such as loud music
or aggressive driving. All of these things help to reduce the
chances of having an accident.
I have both been
in the car with someone who was not driving responsibly and observed
others on the road driving carelessly by speeding, swerving and
disobeying traffic devices and signs. I have asked friends to slow
down or to give me their phones so they could concentrate on the
road. My mother is in the insurance industry and has shared with me
the statistics on texting while driving accidents and damages and
injuries that can be caused by reckless or careless driving. I have
learned from this and try to be responsible behind the wheel.
We all take on an obligation when operating a vehicle. Follow the
rules, act as if your life and everyone’s around you is at stake
and be smart. I have taken the Drive Safe and Save Program through
my insurance company to learn about being a safe driver. I also
require people in my car to wear their seatbelt and keep the noise to
a minimum. It may seem quite simplistic, but this is a critical way
do my part to keep the roads safe for everyone. Spread the word that
it is cool to drive safe!
