The
Hot Seat
The
first year after a teen gets their license is one of the most
exciting, but also one of the most dangerous years of their life. It
includes going out with friends, having the first taste of freedom,
getting your first job, and having more responsibilities. Along with
this freedom, though, comes a decision. Will you let this first year
of driving become your last? The choice is up to you.
5,864
teen drivers die each year and an average of 9 teens each day… The
main cause of this many deaths is due to a lack of preparation and
training. To reduce the number of deaths from driving, extra training
is required. Today, a person can acquire a license with little to no
real-world training. For example, in order to get a permit, a person
must pass an online test while in order to get a full license, one
must pass an actual driving test. But is this enough preparation? Two
tests, to prepare you to drive for the rest of your life? In order to
solve this epidemic, driving programs could be enforced/ required and
there could be an increase in the number of tests a person must go
through in order to be awarded their license.
If
I had gone through more training, it could’ve saved me from having
my first car accident. I had been driving for just a few months,
getting more comfortable on the road, (probably a little too
comfortable) and I caused an accident, which completely ruined my
car. Im extremely thankful that thats all it ruined though. The
accident could’ve been much worse. I could’ve not only hurt
myself but also the driver I ran into… I strongly believe that if I
had gone through more training before I got my license, I would’ve
been spared my first and only car accident.
In
conclusion, are you willing to let distracted driving cost you your
life? Not only is it a danger to you, but it’s a danger to the
drivers around you. Families are torn apart because of reckless
driving. Are you okay with living with the burden of ruining a family
over a text message or a phone call? Is your phone more important
than your life? Dangerous driving is a real thing. Don’t be the
cause of someone else’s death. The choice is yours. What will you
choose?
